Early, Elementary, and Reading Education

The Department of Early, Elementary, and Reading Education (EERE) offers graduate and undergraduate programs in literacy, early childhood, and elementary education that are approved by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

All programs have an extensive fieldwork component that assures students have varied opportunities for experiences working with children and families. Programs and faculty are housed in Memorial Hall.
EERE is home to 17 full-time faculty members and 1 staff member. The following undergraduate and graduate programs are offered by the department:
Elementary Education, 4-year, Bachelor's of Science, Grades PreK-6
Elementary Education, Bachelor's of Individualized Study, Grades PreK-6
Early Childhood Associate's Degree to Bachelor's of Individualized Study, Grades PreK-3
Literacy Education, Master's of Education

Duties and Responsibilities:

The EERE department is seeking a full-time tenure track Assistant/Associate professor to begin employment in August 2025.

The successful candidate should: demonstrate a collaborative approach to teaching, scholarship, and service that involves working with colleagues both within and beyond the academic unit; articulate an ambitious future-oriented vision for the department that includes attracting diverse new faculty and students to the programs; teach in-person, online, and hybrid classes in multiple programs; mentor students in these programs; serve as a member of students' Honors and Capstone committees; collaborate in research in the field; and build capacity and partnerships with school districts and community agencies in Virginia, as well as across the country. We are particularly interested in candidates with science education backgrounds and/or elementary generalists.


Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualifications:

Candidates should hold an appropriate terminal degree in Education. ABD candidates will be considered; the degree must be in hand by the start date.
Candidates must have demonstrated previous experience as an early childhood and/or elementary teacher, instructional coach in an early childhood or elementary school, or other leadership position focusing on grades PreK-6;
An established research/scholarship agenda or have a plan for research and scholarship;
Demonstrated experience developing curriculum and/or assessment;
Demonstrated understanding and/or research in culturally responsive pedagogy/leadership, and inclusive excellence;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Demonstrated successful experience teaching in higher education, online or in-person (preferred);
Experience with global engagement initiatives (preferred); and
Demonstrated experience securing external funding (preferred).
