JOB SUMMARY

The senior assistant director is responsible for the recruitment and counseling of primarily traditional first year and international students and sometimes adult and transfer students; providing office leadership and contributing to international strategy. They are expected to travel to regional, national and possibly international recruitment events, meet with prospective students and their families, and evaluate several hundred applications per year. They will work with colleagues at Simmons, international partners and professional organizations; and provide international recruitment recommendations to leadership. Additional responsibilities and projects will be assigned as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • The senior assistant director will coordinate recruitment of international and first year students to Simmons and also manage a traditional territory of first-year students. They will recruit, evaluate and counsel students from the prospect stage through their enrollment. They will develop communications and contact students, families, and counselors to motivate and assist students in moving through all points in the admission funnel. They will identify the key priorities and needs of individual students and their families and use appropriate communications to influence their decision to enroll. Within each population, the senior assistant director will identify and develop new opportunities and entry points in the prospect funnel with the goal of meeting institutional enrollment priorities. They will advise on recruitment strategy for international students. The senior assistant director will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to customer service by communicating clearly, positively, and effectively in a timely manner with a diverse group of constituents.

  • The senior assistant director will work with strategies to recruit international students to Simmons. They will lead projects within the Office of Undergraduate Admission informing the international application review process, liaising with external partners, and serving as liaison to other Simmons areas on international initiatives (including the Center for Global Education). They will advise colleagues in Undergraduate Admission on how their projects can best serve the needs of international students. They will train professional and student staff on international-related topics.

  • This position requires travel to college fairs and high schools to speak with prospective students, their parents, and college counselors. The senior assistant director will plan travel and events within their assigned territory, including strategizing what schools to visit and events to attend and maintaining positive relationships with college counselors, consultants, and community organizations. This position will travel approximately 4-8 weeks in the fall and 2-4 weeks in the spring and summer. Travel may be regional, national, or possibly international and is not restricted to the established territory of the counselor. The senior assistant director will participate in all on-campus recruitment events, as well as those hosted off campus when appropriate. They will also coordinate virtual international recruitment events and information sessions. The specific geographic territory and/or populations will be assigned to the senior assistant director yearly and may be changed at the discretion of the management team. This position is the primary application reviewer for their recruitment territory and will assist others in their review as needed. This will include being the first reader for 250-425 applications per year and potentially a second reader for applications, and participating in Admission Committee.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid US driver's license and ability to rent a car, as most recruitment occurs in areas not served by public transportation or reliable taxis
  • Passport or REAL ID will be required before the government deadline (currently May 2025), as this position requires 4+ flights per year
  • Three years of professional experience in an undergraduate admission setting. Other types of work experiences could include graduate admission, financial aid, or high school counseling.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree;
  • Fluency in one or more of the most common languages other than English in our applicant pool (Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, and/or Haitian Creole);
  • Experience with Slate or another CRM;

WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • 12 months at 40 Hours / week, with significant hours beyond the established work week at certain times of the year;
  • Communicate with others in-person and by email, video conferencing, and telephone;
  • Work is performed in a setting with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances;



When not traveling:

  • Hybrid schedule (on campus 3 days per week)
  • Generally sedentary office environment with significant time operating a computer
  • During reading season (generally November-March), days may last up to 10 hours and the counselor must read and rate applications on a computer for 8+ hours per day



During the travel season:

  • The senior assistant director must travel independently for approximately 4-8 weeks in the fall (generally late August to early November) and 2-4 weeks in the spring (generally late February to mid-May), with occasional short trips in the summer. Trips will range from day trips, to brief overnights, to multiple trips that require overnight stays on location for up to two weeks at a time. Travel may be virtual, regional, or national, and though it will primarily be within their assigned territories, it is not restricted to their assigned territories. During the travel season, they will typically work 3-4 nights per week (workdays may last up to 16 hours) and will attend college fairs and other events that are held on weekends and holidays.
  • Most trips require several hours of driving per day; and many trips require significant time on planes and/or trains
  • College fair setup and breakdown requires light lifting (up to 20 pounds) of fair materials 5+ times per day. College fairs may last from 45 minutes up to 5 hours and are generally in a crowded indoor space like a gym, cafeteria, or convention center, and are occasionally held outdoors in temperate weather.
