BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Claremont McKenna College (CMC) is seeking a gift officer with the capacity to develop and maintain donor relationships. This position will play an integral role within the Office of Leadership Giving and will be focused on executing a rapid and efficient prospect qualification strategy. The Individual Giving Officer (IGO) will be responsible for cultivating and securing leadership level annual and major philanthropic gifts, approximately in the range of $10,000 to $100,000+ from CMC alumni, parents and friends.  Reporting to the Director of Leadership Giving, the Individual Giving Officer must also work collaboratively with the Executive Director of Advancement on prospect strategy and with the Research & Relationship management team on a regular basis.

 

The Individual Giving Officer will maintain a fluid portfolio of assigned prospects for cultivation.  Some assignments will be retained for long-term cultivation, and some assignments will transition to other gift officers in Advancement.  Currently, the IGO’s portfolio will be comprised of newly identified prospects, CMC’s Research Institutes and Centers board members, prospects for emerging initiatives like the Sports Bowl, and high-end engagement targets.  The IGO will be involved in making recommendations about long-term relationship management assignments.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and implement strategies for qualifying cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding donor prospects in assigned portfolio of approximately 200 prospects. Assigned prospect quantity subject to change based on pipeline stage development.
  • Responsible for all direct interactions and communications with assigned prospects.  This includes the solicitations of unrestricted annual gifts, Research Institute board commitments, and gifts of these prospects.
  • Familiarize his or herself with Advancement fundraising priorities and fundraising priorities from other areas of the College, in order to make a knowledgeable and persuasive presentation to donor prospects.
  • Support Executive Director of Advancement in executing a prospect qualification strategy aimed at identifying new Annual Giving and Leadership level donors to the College.
    • Conduct 20 qualification meetings on a monthly basis and determine a constituent’s inclination to support CMC through philanthropy or engagement to the College. Visit quantity subject to change based on pipeline stage development.
    • Serve as a member of the Research Management Team and provide recommendations for prospect assignment and management opportunities.
    • Seek out opportunities to engage prospective donors with the College through events, annual solicitations and regular communication updates. 
  • Maintain prospect tracking and regularly update the College’s records for each assigned constituent.
  • Excel in a holistic approach, which uses all resources of the college, including events, college leadership, Admission, Athletics and Soll Center for Student Opportunity connections.
  • Serve as a lead project manager for emerging fundraising initiatives, as directed by the Director of Leadership Giving and Executive Director of Advancement. Partner with key offices in Advancement and campus to develop the strategic plan, prospect plan, and execution of solicitations.
  • Expectation of evening and weekend work around College events and activities.
  • Other duties related to the position as they arise.

 

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

 

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent training or experience.

 

EXPERIENCE: Three or more years of successful fundraising experience, including the solicitation of leadership gifts.  Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, excellent writing skills and ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

 

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license is required.
 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to set and implement strategic plan for individual prospects; innovative mastery of gift management and best practices covering the art of individual relationships and the science of database management; familiarity with advancement systems
  • Working knowledge of the entire spectrum of gifts, from outright cash and stocks to bequests and annuities, as well as basic understanding of relevant benefits of giving.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to connect with donors and prospects of all levels
  • Must be able to negotiate issues, resolve problems and have strong influencing skills.

 

OTHER:

 

REQUIRED HOURS:  The regular hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend and evening work will at times be expected. Travel may be required.  Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. This is a 12-month position.

 

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: 

This is an exempt, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

 

SALARY RANGE:

The anticipated salary range is $90,000 - $100,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
