Job Description Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking applications for a Senior Scientist who will assume oversight for and participate in studies involving large animals as well as rodents. They will be expected to independently conduct research activity in the lab (including but not limited to animal surgery, histology, bench assays). Additionally, they will provide high-level research support in the operations and oversight for the peripheral nerve projects, such as providing insight on conceptualization and design of experiments, networking with internal and external collaborators, and writing abstracts, presentations, manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and research grant applications.

Job Responsibilities:

Conduct research of significant value in the biomedical engineering field with a special focus towards peripheral nerve injury and repair. Performs professional and scientific research in the laboratory and advises the Principal Investigator (PI) on strategies to meet project goals and structure the research team. Develops research strategies for carrying out project objectives.

Writes abstracts, including developing an original research question, identifying relevant preliminary evidence and conceptual framework, overseeing data analysis, drawing conclusions, submitting to international scientific conferences, and presenting work if selected.

Drafts grant proposals, protocols, study materials, presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts, and assists the PI with design, preparation, and submission of upcoming grant submissions and pilot projects.

Other duties as assigned.

Experience required:

Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 5 to 7 years or Master of Science, Master of Arts, and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required:

• Research project coordination or other relatable work experience.
• Proficiency in the commercialization process of medical products.
• Awareness of patent application and approval processes.
• Demonstrated ability with software and experience analyzing qualitative data.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Computer literacy with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
• Supervising and managing a multi-disciplinary team. Desire to provide mentorship to junior technicians and graduate students
• Large animal surgery and experimental management, especially in the setting of preclinical studies
• Rodent surgery, particularly stereotactic injections and microsurgical techniques

The following qualifications are desired:

• Experience with managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to write IACUC protocols and navigate regulatory issues
