The Political Science department, a three-member department with a strong teaching and publication tradition, is announcing a one-year position at the rank of visiting lecturer beginning fall 2025. The political science faculty at Whitworth has a shared interest in promoting justice and reconciliation, both domestic and international. We are looking for a candidate who will join us in those efforts and bring their own strengths to our welcoming community.

Contract Start Date: July 1, 2025

Core Responsibilities

This colleague will teach seven courses in American Politics with an emphasis on law and courts. The full-time teaching load typically consists of three courses in the fall, three courses in the spring and a course in January-term. One of these course lines will take the form of a course release to serve as the university's pre-law adviser. Teaching responsibilities include upper and lower division courses in law and justice according to department needs and the colleague's area of specialization. Ability to teach Constitutional Law, along with International or Environmental Law is strongly preferred. Course offerings in political theory and/or those that engage issues of gender, race, ethnicity, and/or faith are especially welcome. Candidates are encouraged to note if they have particular interest in participating in the university's shared curriculum offerings or teaching an interdisciplinary course. A J.D. is welcome, though not required.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities


  1. Ph.D. in Political Science is preferred. Candidates with advanced standing in a Political Science Ph.D. program, or who hold a JD or a Master's degree in Political Science will be considered.
  2. Demonstrated effectiveness at college-level teaching.
  3. Demonstrated growth in cultural competence, awareness of societal and structural inequities and proven experience in effectively establishing relationships and positive communications with students and other constituents across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class or religious perspectives.
  4. Strong potential for an on-going stream of research in the candidate's area of specialization.
  5. A personal commitment to the Christian faith.
  6. The ability to communicate effective in the language of instruction (English).
  7. A commitment to equal opportunity for all persons.
  8. A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth as a Christian liberal arts institution.
