Position Summary:
University of Idaho Extension Forestry and the Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences seeks applicants for a 12-month, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist - Forest Operations and Products Manufacturing. The position has the following responsibilities: 70% outreach and Extension; 25%scholarship and creative activities; and 5% university service and leadership.

The position will provide statewide leadership on the sustainable use of wood products from the forest to the consumer, with an emphasis on developing and delivering statewide programming related to logging systems, transportation and logistics, wood products manufacturing linkages, and related topics across the forest supply chain in Idaho. The Extension specialist is expected to develop an externally funded, nationally recognized research and Extension program supporting the forest and wood products industry. Topics of interest may include, but are not limited to, estimating values of forest products (including timber), equipment operations and productivity, site impacts and safety characteristics of logging systems, transportation systems and logistics, related business operations and financing, and wood products manufacturing linkages.

Educational programs and research results will be delivered through classes, workshops, demonstrations, research projects, volunteer training sessions, scholarly journals, peer-reviewed Extension bulletins, popular press articles, digital information products and other methods as appropriate. The educational programs will be accessible to students (including those enrolled in the A.S., Forest Operations and Technology and B.S., Forestry degrees housed in the Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences), county Extension educators, loggers, and other interested parties. Instruction will include participation in Idaho's Logger Education to Advance Professionalism (LEAP) program. The Extension specialist will promote University of Idaho Extension programs with stakeholders, elected officials and other community partners through newsletters, websites, press releases, radio/television, and social media. When appropriate for meeting broader Extension objectives, the Extension specialist may assist with Future Farmers of America (FFA), 4-H and other technical programming related to the forest supply chain, including harvesting and transportation systems and forest products manufacturing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in forestry or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Experience conducting research in Forest Operations and/or Products.
  • Experience communicating verbally, in writing, and listening with public speaking/presentation skills.
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Experience interacting individuals through course instruction, problem solving, communication, relationship building and leadership development.
  • Experience working on projects both independently and in a team setting.
  • Experience working with underrepresented audiences and communities.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience delivering Extension programming or coursework related to Forest Operations and/or Forest Products Manufacturing.
  • At least two years of experience conducting research related to Forest Operationsand/or Forest Products Manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with Idaho's Best Management Practices for Forestry.
  • Experience developing, delivering, and managing social media content.
  • Experience working directly with logging contractors to evaluate and communicate topics of interest related to current and emerging logging systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design innovative and effective educational programs inresponse to local needs.
  • Experience evaluating needs of local stakeholders through surveys, needsassessments, or similar methodologies.
  • Experience and success with grant proposal development and implementation.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and coaching others
