Job Description Summary
The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is recruiting an Associate Design Strategist for a unique role at the intersection of healthcare and behavioral design. Join a collaborative, impactful, and equity-focused team working to improve health outcomes and effect systemic change at Penn Medicine and across the healthcare industry.

The Nudge Unit is a joint venture between the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Transformation & Innovation (CHTI) and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics (CHIBE). Founded in 2016, the Nudge Unit is the world's first behavioral design team embedded within a health system. We leverage insights from behavioral and implementation sciences to design, implement, evaluate, and scale nudges that steer medical decision-making toward higher-value care, improved patient outcomes, and more equitable health care delivery. Our vision is a future where the right choice is the easy choice.

The Nudge Unit has worked on 100+ projects, testing interventions in health systems and conducting over 25 randomized trials. Our work has resulted in over 100 publications in leading medical journals like NEJM, JAMA, Nature, and PNAS. The Nudge Unit currently supports a broad portfolio of projects to improve care within Penn Medicine as well as a grant funded research aimed at improving acute care and preventing overdoses and injuries. Our interventions often use electronic health records, automated text messaging, smartphone apps, and other digital interventions to change behavior.

Job Description

The Associate Design Strategist applies methods of service design, design research and innovation practices to understand complex problem spaces and define opportunities for improvement. They will collaborate with Nudge Unit and CHTI staff, and project partners to define opportunities for “nudges” to improve health outcomes and patient, clinicians, and staff experience. Partnering with a diverse population of clinicians, staff, and patients, the Associate Design Strategist will help build feedback loops and co-creation strategies that incorporate both lived and expert experience into the design process.

This role will report to the Senior Design Strategist follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring 2-3 days a week onsite in Philadelphia for in-person office days and/or conducting ethnographic research at one of our hospitals.

The Associate Design Strategist must have the ability to work with diverse stakeholders, be comfortable coding and synthesizing data, and have excellent communication skills.

The responsibilities include:

  • Assist in developing and executing design research strategies while practicing ethical, equitable, and rigorous approaches.
  • Collect, code, and analyze unstructured qualitative data.
  • Translate findings into insights that inform problem definition and solution refinement.
  • Help create artifacts like design research reports, user journey maps, workflow diagrams, and service blueprints.
  • Communicate findings and articulate actionable recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Assist in developing prototypes, mock-ups, flyers, posters, and/or other design assets to solicit feedback while testing interventions in context.
  • Support the facilitation of workshops, feedback sessions, and participatory design sessions with internal and external participants.
  • Works with Nudge Unit staff, partners, and key stakeholders to scale new interventions.
  • Participates in initiatives with staff to enable a culture of innovation across the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the Nudge Unit and CHTI.



Qualifications

A successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years professional experience conducting service design projects demonstrating the ability to complete complex, thoughtful, and timely work with colleagues, clients, or stakeholders.
  • Experience with design research methods, like user interviews, ethnography, contextual inquiries, usability testing, surveys, or desk research.
  • Ability to interact with highly diverse populations and employ an empathetic, intersectional, and trauma-informed approach.
  • Proficiency in accurate, thorough and ethical data analysis, like qualitative coding, thematic analysis, and survey analysis.
  • Understanding of human-centered design principles and employing service design techniques like journey mapping, blueprints, workflow maps, and prototyping.
  • Effective communication skills, including writing, presenting, and facilitating.
  • Ability to navigate complexity and ambiguity in projects with complex workflows, stakeholders, and systems.



Bonus points for:

  • Graphic, visual, and/or UI/UX design skills.
  • Rapid prototyping and experiment design.
  • Background in health care, whether as a clinician or in health care management or innovation.
  • Experience in application of behavioral science, implementation science, informatics, and/or design thinking.
  • Proficiency in a second language.
