The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah is recruiting to build on a nation-leading clinical informatics program that is impacting lives daily to address real-world problems. We are opening several faculty positions for the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Tenure Track) with demonstrated abilities in teaching and research. Applications of clusters of collaborators are also welcomed. As part of our departmental and University of Utah Health (UHealth) Strategic Initiatives, the department plans to recruit new faculty members with distinctive expertise in (i) digital health, (ii) clinical informatics, (iii) clinical research informatics (translational clinical informatics), and/or (ii) artificial intelligence (e.g., generative AI, LLM, diffusion models, causal networks, machine learning, CNN, deep neural network, etc.) with focus on any modalities that translate to healthcare or wellness. Candidates may have other additional synergistic research foci including, but not limited to, imaging informatics, informatics for personalized and precision medicine, genomic medicine, translational bioinformatics relating data and methods into clinical domains. A track record of external funding from national funding agencies, such as NIH, DOD, AHRQ, HRSA, PCORI, NSF, DARPA is highly desired. Funding from institutional sources, corporations, or foundations, is also of interest. A track record of team science research with highly collaborative, multidisciplinary teams is highly desired.
Major responsibilities include maintaining an ambitious research program, teaching graduate courses, advising graduate students in Biomedical Informatics, supervising research for pre- and postdoctoral Biomedical Informatics fellows, and supervising teams developing novel applications of information technology for use in real-world healthcare settings at UHealth. Energetic, self-directed individuals with a record of achievement and commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and the design and implementation of healthcare technologies are encouraged to apply.
Successful candidates will receive a start-up package and enjoy a stimulating, highly collaborative, and supportive research environment across multiple health care systems. Depending on individual qualifications and interests, the candidate can be offered a joint or adjunct position in other departments, as well as membership(s) in Institutes and/or Centers.
Indeed, the Department has a long history of collaboration that crosses the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), The Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), The Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI), the Veterans Health Administration, Intermountain Healthcare, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, and a statewide network of Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers. The Department works in a rich environment that emphasizes research in life sciences, health sciences, health services research, and informatics in collaboration with colleagues in various Schools and Colleges, including Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. The Department is a National Library of Medicine Biomedical Informatics training site and is one of the oldest informatics departments in the country, having graduated more PhDs than any other program in the world. The Department is co-located with the program in Nursing Informatics. Further details can be found at https://medicine.utah.edu/dbmi.
Candidates are expected to have a PhD from a quantitative field, such as biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, human factors, implementation science, public and population health, health communication, engineering, computational biology, applied mathematics, statistics, or applied physics. Candidates with a professional doctoral degree (e.g., MD, PharmD, DNP, DDS, DO) are also encouraged to apply if they have a demonstrated track record in the relevant areas and have previous training in the quantitative fields listed above (e.g., post-doctoral degree in biomedical informatics). Candidates with a physician or nursing license in Utah can be co-appointed in a department within the School of Medicine and the College of Nursing. Candidates are required to have a strong track record of publications in scientific, medical, and/or nursing journals, as well as computational and/or informatics methods development (e.g., in computational biology, digital health, bioinformatics, and/or biomedical informatics journals).
In addition, prospective faculty will join a culture of collaborative and innovative research that crosses departments and schools within the University of Utah. Unique opportunities at the University of Utah include research on health care quality in a health system that has rated among the top 10 hospitals in the United States for a decade.
