ARCHIVES & REFERENCE SPECIALIST

Position Summary:
The Clarke Historical Library’s Archives and Reference Specialist will be a member of two Clarke teams: Archives and Public Services. As a member of the archives team and under the direction of the Archivist, they will assist with processing a wide range of digital and print archives. As a member of the public services team and under the direction of the Public Services Librarian, they will assist with reference and outreach services. The Archives and Reference Specialist reports to the Clarke’s Public Services Librarian.
Required Qualifications:
Associate’s degree.
One year of experience working in a library setting.
Knowledge of archives and historical research.
Ability and commitment to learn and adopt new technologies and skills.
Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills, good judgment, critical thinking, and organizational and analytical skills.
Evidence of ability and desire to work effectively, positively, and collegially with a wide variety of users including students, faculty, staff, and the community.
Evidence of ability to work in a team-based setting where collaboration, flexibility, reliability, and creativity are essential.

Ability to perform long periods of desk-based computer tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree.
One year of experience in providing user-facing services in a library.
One year work experience arranging and describing archives and creating finding aids.
Knowledge of digital archives preservation practices.
Training or course work in archives management.
Knowledge of rights management issues for digital and print archives and university records.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Assists with preservation monitoring and mitigation actions for digital archives using established tools, systems, and practices.
Assists in a wide range of activities needed to make archival collections in all formats accessible for research, from arranging and describing to creating and encoding finding aids.
Provides reference service in-person in the reading room and by phone, email, and online, ensuring excellent service and positive research interactions for researchers of all skill levels; when needed, supports other public services operations such as instruction and outreach. Staffs Clarke events when needed.
Carries out activities for storing and accessing library materials; supports others in the Clarke to carry out these operations.
Stays current with archival and special collections public services standards and practices.
Serves on library committees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
