One Forest Technician position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. This position is located at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. RESPONSIBILITIES 1) Timber Harvest Preparation - Responsibilities include laying out boundaries, skid trails, log decks, and streamside management zones (SMZs), determining best course of action to mark timber for harvest, determining cruise parameters and implement cruising techniques to estimate volumes, collecting necessary data to update geodatabases (GDBs) and map development. 2) Prescribed Burn Program Support - Responsibilities include direct prescribed burn implementation working as ignition, equipment operator, and/or holding crew members, provide wildfire suppression support as requested, and by constructing new or maintaining existing firebreak network on the installation. May require work with and some maintenance of chainsaws, leaf blowers, various ignition devices, powered water pumps, ATVs, UTVs, fireplow (bulldozer), and other support equipment. 3) Forest Inventory Support – Responsibilities include participation as an inventory crew member collecting tree data and other site and structure metrics using in-place inventory and survey protocols for fixed and various-radius plot. Requires use of electronic data recorders and GPS for navigation and data collection purposes and other forestry tools including diameter tapes, laser range finders and hypsometers, and increment borers. 4) Timber Stand Improvement – Responsibilities include laying out boundaries, identifying crop trees to release, and TSI implementation including use of chainsaws, brush saws, and severe duty mulcher. 5) General forestry equipment and supply inventory and maintenance including hand-receipt inventories, expendable supply inventories/order requests, and general maintenance, repair and upkeep of equipment and tools.
