Assistant Professor, Exceptional Child Education (Tenure Track)

Primary Responsibilities

All tenure track faculty members teach the equivalent of 12 hours per semester and maintain an active scholarly work in their field. This position would include both undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Exceptional Child Education program.

Required Qualifications


  • Ph.D./Ed.D. or ABD (degree completed by August 1, 2024) in Exceptional Child Education / Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction OR Educational Leadership / Administration with a Master's degree in Special Education; Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited / government certified university
  • Teaching certification in mild / moderate cross categorical, early childhood special education, or multiple category areas
  • Minimum of three years full time, special education teaching and/or special education administration
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development in special education
  • Knowledge of national (CEC) teacher preparation standards and current trends in educator preparation
  • Demonstrated potential for successful teaching at the college/university level
  • Demonstrated evidence of scholarly work, i.e. research and/or publications
  • Experience or knowledge of using technology in instruction, including online teaching
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community

Departmental Information: The College of Heath, and Human Studies at Southeast Missouri State University has an award-winning teacher preparation program that is CAEP (formerly NCATE) accredited and approved by the MO Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Department of Elementary, Early, and Special Education department offers undergraduate programs that are recognized by the Association for Childhood International (ACEI), the National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Additionally, graduate programs are offered in elementary and special education, including advanced certificates in reading and math. The teacher preparation programs are experiential, field-based, with faculty actively involved in area PreK - 12 schools.
