Bio Lab Tech

Job Description Summary:
The Biology Lab Technician will prepare and set up assigned labs for the Biology Department. These labs include, but are not limited to: General Biology, Cell Biology, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology. In addition to this, they will facilitate and coordinate the preparation of other labs in the absence of the other lab staff. They will facilitate the delivery of safety lecture for all assigned laboratories at the beginning of each semester and ensure that all chemicals and equipment are in place and ready for lab assignments to be carried out. The employee will be responsible for the maintenance, cleaning, and organization of laboratories and equipment. This person will need to have a valid driver's license and have a good driving record. They will assist with the transport of students to and from field lab locations and provide support in the operations of the greenhouse. Lastly, this person must demonstrate the ability to oversee the handling and care of department live animals (snake).

Specific Duties:
Prepare Biology Laboratories and Equipment for lab sessions:

a. Prepare solutions and reagents for lab experiments

b. Re-stock solutions used prior to each lab period and make more if needed

c. Ensure that all labs are equipped with appropriate equipment needed

d. Attend TA meetings and work with designated Lab instructors to address safety issues and any changes needed to the lab

e. Properly sort, label, and store chemical waste generated in each lab

f. Perform and/or arrange for repairs of equipment as needed

g. Maintain cleanliness and organization in lab spaces, stockrooms, and related spaces

h. Transporting students to and from field lab locations

i. Maintenance, feeding and care for department live animals (snakes)Assist Department Faculty & Staff:

a. Assist faculty and staff with various projects as needed

b. Assist in keeping the chemical inventory up-to-date

c. Maintain cleanliness and organization in lab spaces, stockrooms, and related spaces

d. Initiate work orders to Facilities/OIT that pertain to maintenace/repairs in the lab spaces (i.e. leaks, ventilation, temperature, network, etc.)

e. Attend and participate in staff-relevant NSD and Biology meetings

f. Managing overall operations of greenhouseEnforce Department’s Safety Guidelines, such as Lab Attire and proper PPE Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year advanced understanding of Biology equipment, tools, terminology, methods and procedures.
  • Excellent professional communication skills and phone etiquettes
  • Proficient in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted
    in the course of work
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite- Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • One year experience serving various communities within hired education including staff,
    faculty, and staff



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Works collaboratively & individually to complete major department objectives
  • One year of knowledge in higher education lab setting
