POSITION SUMMARY

In this position, the Research Assistant I will participate in the hands-on implementation of a project aimed to develop the marmoset as a model for studying aging. The position is responsible for performing various animal behavior assays including the setup, take down, and maintenance of relevant equipment. Additionally, the RAI will be responsible for analyzing electron micrographs and assisting with data analysis. It is expected that they critically read primary literature and participate in potential collaborative projects with other Salk laboratories.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assist with animal testing, task programming, data analysis (40%)

In conjunction with researcher

  • Responsible for preparation, setup, take down, maintenance of testing equipment
  • Perform weekly/monthly weights on animals
  • Learn to do basic experimental design programming in ABET
  • Learn to do basic data analysis in Matlab

Analyze electron micrographs and other imaging data, assist with animal procedures to facilitate imaging (40%)

In conjunction with researcher

  • Mix chemicals for perfusions and assist with perfusion procedures
  • Analyze electron micrographs by segmenting various synaptic components and organelles, creating 3D models and taking measurements
  • Learn to analyze live cell imaging data

Read and analyze primary literature (10%)

  • Critically read all assigned articles
  • Seek out and read additional literature pertaining to main interests
  • Contribute to discussions pertaining to literature read

Assist with collaborative projects (10%)

  • Learn/assist with wet lab techniques that our Salk collaborators are using.

 

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • No professional level experience required with relevant degree

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience and application of animal behavior testing

 

EDUCATION

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Undergraduate coursework in life sciences or equivalent work experience

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Punctual, meticulous and rigorous in completing an assigned task. 
  • Proven organizational and time management skills to successfully set priorities, meet established deadlines and recognize new problems with changing priorities and interruptions.
  • Highly organized, effective at multitasking and adept at juggling changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills utilizing sound judgment, tact and a recognition of situations requiring confidentiality.

Preferred:

  • Theoretical knowledge of biological sciences.
  • Ability to diplomatically and professionally interact with all levels of Institute staff and external contacts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with PC operating systems, standard business office equipment and commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and the internet.
  • Experience with Matlab or other coding language/software

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute’s background investigation.
  • Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires constant adjusting focus, grasping, hearing, keying, seeing, sitting, talking, analyzing, calculating, communicating, reading, reasoning, writing, as well as working in confined areas and working inside.
