Position Summary:

The Counselor Education Unit in the Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Higher Education (CEH) at Central Michigan University is accepting applications for a 10-month, remote, full-time fixed term faculty position (one academic year contract term) in Counselor Education, effective August 2024. Summer teaching opportunities may also be available.

The CMU Counseling Program continues to grow since adding its CACREP accredited, fully online program. Please consider joining us as we work to meet the increasing need for mental health professionals in our communities and schools. The CMU Counseling Program offers 60 credit degrees in Addiction, Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling concentrations. The online program offers synchronous (live online) classes in an 8-week accelerated or 16-week format; live synchronous classes are taught from 6-9pm Eastern Time; and we offer 8-week asynchronous classes.

The successful candidate must have a strong professional counseling identity demonstrated by clinical experience and active licensure/credentialing as a counselor and be committed to the academic success of all students and to an environment that acknowledges, encourages, respects, and celebrates diversity and differences. Job duties for this position include:

  • Teach four classes per semester (fall and spring) in our CACREP-accredited M.A. in Counseling program, in both synchronous and asynchronous formats;
  • Attend unit and department meetings as scheduled;
  • Participate in unit and department activities related to this position; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.


This position is open to remote work from within the United States; however, priority consideration will be given to candidates located in Michigan.

Required Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • An earned doctorate in Counselor Education, from a CACREP-accredited institution or ABD if proof from Dissertation Chair of defense and graduation by August 2024.
  • Post-graduate professional clinical and/or school counseling experience.
  • A professional counseling license and/or certification; or license eligible in Michigan.
  • Understanding and demonstrated knowledge and implementation of the multicultural and social justice competencies in counseling.
  • Professional counseling identity, including membership in ACA, ASCA or other professional counseling associations; and
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Demonstrated competence in teaching with experience in the online environment; and
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in a CACREP-accredited Counseling program.

About the Department:

The Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Higher Education is housed within the College of Education & Human Services. The Counseling Program offers three CACREP accredited concentration areas of study: Addiction, Clinical Mental Health, & School Counseling. At present, the program has approximately 330 students total between main campus and the cohort online program, and seven (7) full-time faculty members.
