Job Description

THE ELIOT-PEARSON DEPARTMENT OF CHILD STUDY AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Applied Developmental Science to begin September 1, 2021. The successful applicant’s record should demonstrate the integration of research in developmental science using advanced statistical methods with applied and practice-based knowledge in the service of supporting and enhancing the well-being of children and families.  

The mission of the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development is to enhance the lives of children and families in diverse communities and contexts using collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches in ways that reflect the integration of research and practice - understood in the context of culture and community. The department is known for its undergraduate and graduate programs, including M.A. and Ph.D. programs in several areas of developmental science and applied human development (e.g., master’s concentration in Clinical-Developmental Health and Psychology). Our teaching also serves students in other Tufts departments and schools (e.g., Psychology, Computer Science, Community Health, Urban & Environmental Policy and Planning) and we collaborate with researchers throughout the university (e.g., Tufts University School of Medicine, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy). The Department aims to prepare students to work with culturally diverse children and families in a variety of clinical, educational, research, and policy-oriented settings. Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualifications: Candidates must possess a doctorate in child development, psychology (e.g., clinical, counseling, pediatric, developmental), family studies, education, or related area. Applicants’ research and teaching interests should reflect a focus on the psychological and/or physical well-being of children, adolescents, and their families, such as: the promotion of emotional and behavioral concomitants of health and well-being across the lifespan; sociocultural disparities in well-being and in access to and receipt of services; cultural and contextual considerations in designing, implementing, and evaluating effective interventions and educational programs in a variety of venues (e.g., early intervention and home visiting programs, mental health clinics, special education settings, schools, early childhood centers, hospitals, etc.).  A record of publications in the application of developmental science is required.   


Our preference is for a scholar with experience in program evaluation and/or the application of advanced developmental methods and statistics relevant to developmental science. We are looking for a candidate who will help the department expand its current methodological offerings in areas such as longitudinal designs, methods of causal inference, and/or mixed methods.  We seek a colleague with strong evidence of research potential, including externally funded research and publications, as well as evidence of successful teaching, and applied experience. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program supported by external funding from federal and private sources.


The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their substantive area of interest and to help meet other department teaching needs. Particularly desirable would be courses on any of the following: contemporary perspectives on child/adolescent health and well-being; sociocultural disparities in child and family well-being; trauma-informed interventions for child and family well-being; early education interventions; program evaluation and or advanced statistical methods.
