The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for the Director, Center for Research in Innovation and Smart Cities (CRISC) to be the founding leader of a center with a university-wide, cross-disciplinary focus. The decision of Foxconn to locate its campus in UW-Parkside’s neighborhood, the commitment of the city of Racine to a smart future through its successful effort as one of five U.S. cities to win the Smart Cities Readiness Challenge, and evolving plans for the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood, create unprecedented opportunities in research and teaching in education, healthcare, government, environment, and transportation.
It is anticipated the Director of the Center for Research in Innovation and Smart Cities will convene leaders from faculty, higher education, business, healthcare, government, and civic groups to develop a research and training agenda for the center. This individual will build UW-Parkside’s capacity to attract sponsored research through collaboration with WiSys, the dedicated technology transfer office for the 11 comprehensive universities in the University of Wisconsin System. Also, the individual in this role will create research opportunities for other faculty and students, develop teaching and training initiatives, establish visiting scholar and speaker programs, link us to smart cities professional networks, and help UW-Parkside further strengthen its leadership role in the region including establishing a physical presence in both Kenosha and Racine. There is an expectation that the person in this role will teach, the nature and frequency to be determined based on the interests of the University and the successful candidate. The CRISC director will also support National Science Foundation-funded research campus faculty are doing to develop training methods for development of Industry 4.0 knowledge and skills.
The ideal candidate will effectively connect the university to public and private sector leaders, will position the university as a “thinking and strategic planning arm” of regional government, and will have a broad perspective on the political and social possibilities of smart cities development.
The Director of the Center for Research in Innovation and Smart Cities will further the UW System’s 2020 FWD strategic aims to encourage innovation through basic and applied research; expand academic programs in areas needed in the Wisconsin workforce; expand connections with employers to better respond to workforce needs; and provide professional development opportunities to promote creativity and innovation within the university and in the broader community. It is expected that the Center for Research in Innovation and Smart Cities will be self-sustaining within five years.
Education, Experience, Training and/or Certifications
The successful candidate will possess a PhD from any of a range of disciplines, will have a track record of generating sponsored research, working with academics and professionals from multiple disciplines and sectors, is an effective teacher, and possesses expertise in smart cities.
