Dalhousie’s Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) and Department of Community Health and Epidemiology (CH&E) invite applications for a tenure-stream faculty position in the area of Health Data Science at the level of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed between FCS (55%) and CH&E (45%).

Dalhousie University is a leading academic and research institution in Atlantic Canada. The Faculty of Computer Science is a research-intensive unit that currently comprises 30 full-time research faculty and many cross-appointments and adjuncts, with areas of focus including bioinformatics algorithms, health informatics, medical imaging, genomics, and machine learning. FCS offers research-intensive and applied training at the undergraduate, Master’s, PhD, and postdoctoral levels, including the new Master of Digital Innovation program. Researchers in FCS hold external funding from NSERC, MITACS, Genome Canada, and many other sources. The Faculty hosts the Dalhousie Institute for Big Data Analytics, which has academic and industry partnerships centred on deep learning and artificial intelligence.

The Department of Community Health and Epidemiology is a vibrant and research-intensive department of 18 full-time faculty and more than 50 cross-appointed faculty with grant funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and many other national and provincial funding agencies. Areas of focus include population health, health services research, and health outcomes. The Department offers MSc and Ph.D. training in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research, and contributes to the interdisciplinary Master of Digital Innovation and undergraduate medical education programs. The Department houses key university and province-wide resources, including Health Data Nova Scotia, the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, and the Health and Environments Research Centre Laboratory, and works closely with the Maritime Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research SUPPORT Unit (MSSU), housed by Nova Scotia Health Authority, providing leadership on its advisory and scientific committees.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, completed by the start date of the appointment. They will be expected to have demonstrated research excellence at the intersection of applied health and data science, including but not limited to AI & Health, medical image processing, health data analytics, or genomics. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to carry out independent research in their field and have the potential to lead an externally funded program of research. They will be expected to supervise graduate students and other trainees in a multidisciplinary research setting.

The candidate must demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude for teaching and student mentorship, with a capability to initiate and grow interdisciplinary education initiatives across faculties and departments. This includes a capacity to contribute to current programs.

Emphasis will be placed on candidates with the potential to span disciplines and build new collaborations in the university and with external partners including governments, the health-care system, and industry.
