Police Dispatcher

Primary Purpose:
The Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for receiving and transmitting routine and emergency telephone and radio messages, viewing camera surveillance systems, and identifying issues important to the department's mission.

Essential Functions:

  • Answers emergency telephone requests for police, fire and medical emergencies.
  • Dispatches police, required equipment, or arranges for response from other departments, as appropriate.
  • Maintains radio communication with University police units and for maintaining logs of the activities of each officer.
  • Maintains various departmental files including criminal records and confidential files.
  • Assists in training new dispatchers.
  • Performs a variety of clerical and typing work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.


This position serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA) as outlined by the Clery Act. CSAs have federally mandated responsibilities to report crimes that are reported them.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • One (1) month of customer service related work experience.
  • Must type a minimum of 35wpm (Is expected to be at 40 wpm by completion of training period.)
  • Must undergo and pass a complete police background investigation.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in law enforcement setting.
  • POST Basic Dispatcher Certificate – If hired without this, candidate must complete their certification within one year of employment.
  • Ability to retain and read maps street, building, and compass directions.
  • Ability to research and gather information from telephone interviews.
  • Effectively communicate over telephone and radio equipment.
  • Ability to condense lengthy information into coherent communication.
  • Knowledge in the use of surveillance cameras, radios and other communication systems and equipment.
  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.



Physical Requirements:

Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting of up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:Work is performed during non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Union membership required.

Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
