Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs position. The Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $65,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership, the Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs oversees, with support, the orientation program at Amherst College. Orientation is a one week experience with academic and social programming planned with collaboration between on and off campus partners. The Associate Director will be responsible for setting the schedule, organizing and facilitating the week, hiring, training and supervising the orientation leaders. The Associate Director will also be responsible for family engagement on campus, supporting family orientation programming during orientation and family weekend in the fall semester. The Associate Director will interact professionally with all levels of staffing, including faculty, administrators, and the student population. This position will act as a liaison between students and other campus departments. This person will be self-directed and have the ability to organize and prioritize to meet deadlines, time constraints, and faculty and student concerns in a dynamic and diverse professional environment. Individual performance is evaluated annually by the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership.

Summary of Responsibilities:


  • Oversee Fall and Spring Orientation Programs
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Orientation, the Orientation Implementation and the Amherst Association of Students Orientation Committees
  • Assemble assessment reports following New Student Orientation survey for distribution to facilitators and steering committees
  • Communicate with campus partners, including Registrar, Facilities, Information Services, Conference and Event Services, Student Health Services, Information Technology, Dean of Students Office and Dining to gather all new student information to ensure a smooth arrival for new students
  • Manage distribution of the annual DeMott New Student Reading in collaboration with Campus Print and Mail and the Center for International Student Engagement
  • Maintain the New Student Program budget of approximately $240,000


  • Assist the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership in planning leadership trainings and programs for all student leaders, including but not limited to SEL student workers, orientation leaders, RSO leaders
  • Collaborate with partners across the College to create a more centralized leadership development program
  • Support requests for trainings from student leaders
  • Act as a liaison between student leaders and leadership opportunities on campus


  • Act as liaison between Alumni and Constituent Programs and Student Engagement and Leadership, particularly to support their planning and execution of programming for parents during Orientation in both the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Coordinate communications with parents and families in collaboration with the Associate Director of Communications in Student Affairs and Alumni and Constituent Programs
  • Assist with family weekend initiatives for the college, partnering with Athletics, Alumni and Constituent Programs, Facilities, Events, etc

Preferred and Required Qualifications



  • Master's Degree Higher Education Administration or related field
  • Three years of related experience
  • Proven event and/or venue management experience
  • Knowledge of office management systems and procedures
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills, at times in high duress situations
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in using administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong skills in written, oral, and electronic communication
  • Commitment to supporting a diverse student community
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the campus community
  • Broad understanding of working in a student-focused environment


  • Experience working on a college or university campus
