In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Full Salary Range
Minimum: $100,000.00
Maximum $110,000.00

Job Summary
The Assistant Professor in Shelter Medicine will be responsible for creating a clinical training program for veterinary students in a facility providing high volume, high quality clinical services for both the city and the public. This position will also be responsible for the development of collaborative graduate training programs in shelter medicine.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individuals must possess this knowledge, these skills, and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

1. Ability to orally communicate with others, both in person and by telephone. Ability to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, students and outside contacts.
2. Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality.
3. Organizational skills necessary in prioritizing workload and delegating responsibility.
4. Knowledge of educational needs for contemporary veterinary practice.
5. Knowledge and skills in shelter medicine.

Required Qualifications
• DVM degree and license to practice in California.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• 5+ years clinical experience
• Knowledge of and experience with high volume, high quality, spay/neuter programs and high volume, low cost veterinary services
• Experience with student training and supervision
• Experience with clinical graduate training program management, i.e. internships, residency programs, etc.
• Demonstrated record of relationship building within the animal sheltering community

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree (MPH, MS, etc.)
• Board certification (ACVPM, ABVP, etc.)
• Bilingual (Spanish/English)
• Ability to develop and maintain a scholarly research program.

Describe Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands, reach with hands and arms, and stoop. They employee must have the ability to be confident around pets (ie. dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.) The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bit or scratch, and on occasion is exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
