Starting date : 1 September 2020 Application deadline:  30 November 2019 Description Central European University (CEU) is seeking candidates for a Chair in Romani Studies. The successful candidate will be conferred an academic rank in accordance with the faculty policies of the University, based his or her academic record and credentials. We encourage applications from both established and up-and-coming scholars with a track record of public engagement with Roma causes. CEU has taken a lead role in Roma education, and expanding activities in this area represents a strategic priority for the University. The University runs a groundbreaking Roma in European Societies (RES) initiative, with a primary focus on graduate academic and professional education. RES involves degree and non-degree teaching and learning, executive education and professional development, research and work with Roma and non-Roma organizations to support the recognition and participation of Roma people in all spheres of life. The initiative builds on an-almost 20-year track record of Roma access programs, preparing more than 250 Roma youth for graduate education and professional careers.   MAIN TASKS The Chair’s teaching and research obligations are similar to those of academic unit heads at CEU. The normal teaching load is 12 taught credits (where one credit equals 50 minutes of classroom contact over a 12-week academic term) per academic year, plus student supervision. Unit heads receive a 6-credit teaching waiver. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and publish regularly in both academic and other outlets. In addition, the Chair will have important academic administration responsibilities. S/he will guide and develop RES and facilitate engagement between the program and partner universities, government entities, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the broader community, with the aim of strengthening a growing global network of researchers and advocates on Roma issues. S/he will work collaboratively with CEU faculty and staff working on issues that affect Europe’s Roma to support growth in scale and impact, leveraging CEU’s resources with the aim of bringing high-level and wide-ranging attention to the urgent roadblocks to Roma advancement and inclusion, and further develop CEU into a center of excellence on the topic. The Chair will coordinate and rely on support from the administrative team of the Roma programs. Compensation An internationally competitive salary is offered commensurate with experience.
