Associate Vice President and Chief Risk Officer

Reporting directly to the VP for Business & Finance, this position is responsible for the design, implementation, monitoring & adjusting of university-wide risk management & safety programs that address organizational priorities & effectively integrates the best risk management techniques & practices to address & mitigate issues of risk & liability, as well as ensuring implementation of appropriate risk controls. The AVP will plan, develop & monitor insured & uninsured losses, insurance coverages & premiums, worker's compensation & liability coverages & premiums & related claims handling, placement of insurance & funding, loss prevention/control prevention development, & allocation of risk exposures.
Risk Finance & Insurance-Manage insurance renewals & negotiations w/carriers (UE, FM Global, Liberty Mutual, etc.); analyze & extrapolate underwriting data; review & make recommendations on alternative risk financing techniques; evaluate claims & litigation for potential liability & settlement value; perform policy coverage analyses & partner w/insurance brokers & carriers to close coverage gaps.
Loss Control & related-perform risk/claims analysis; assist inside/outside counsel in the supervision & management of tort litigations; establish risk management policies, procedures & practices; implement & oversee training programs; manage the self-insurance claims administration system for litigated & non-litigated liability claims; serve as university liaison to insurance companies, claims administrators, local, state & federal regulatory authorities, as appropriate.
Environmental Health and Safety - manage research safety, campus and occupational safety , and environmental programs for the university.
Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Management & Business Continuity-with other campus leadership, oversee, develop & coordinate the functions of emergency & disaster preparedness & business continuity for the University system in effort to limit loss of life & property.
Staff Supervision-conduct ongoing staff coaching, performance management, regular performance reviews, & plan & manage formal & informal meetings with staff & direct reports.
Liability & Contract Review-establish contract standards for insurance and indemnification working, review leases, contracts & other legal documents, to evaluate appropriateness of working & ensure compliance with insurance & risk management policies & guidelines.
Strategic Planning-annually develop a Business Integration Plan (BIP) strategy for the department, research, create, implement & maintain leading-edge risk management programs for the campus; prepare & present department reports to management; prepare & give presentations on enterprise risk management to select Committees of the SMU Board of Trustees.
A bachelor's degree in business, finance, insurance, risk management, or related field is required for this position. An MBA or Master's degree in risk management is highly preferred, though a law degree of Doctor of Education or Philosophy in a relevant domain is also acceptable.
A minimum of 7 years of risk management experience, including loss prevention and exposure to analysis experience is required. A minimum of three years of management or supervisor experience is also required.
Professional designations such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), or related professional designation is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The ideal candidate will have proven knowledge of principles and practices of risk management, insurance, emergency management and applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations. Practical experience in developing, planning and implementing a risk management program, and in program monitoring contract law & safety practices is strongly preferred. Must have proven ability to communicate at the expert level, orally & in writing, on complex issues.
Candidate should be able to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and have a strong commitment to teamwork and customer service. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the university. Exceptional analytical skills with proven experience in gathering and analyzing data, reasoning logically, drawing valid conclusions, and making effective recommendations to management.
