Job Description/Responsibilities

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Library and Information Services invites applications from dynamic, proactive, and service-oriented candidates for the position of Assessment Librarian.

This is a temporary position and is available immediately. The appointment will last for a period of twelve months. In the future, the position may become a tenure-track position, at that point, a national search will be conducted.

Reporting to the Interim Dean of Library and Information Services (LIS), the Assessment Librarian in collaboration with subject librarians develops a comprehensive information literacy plan from freshman to senior levels. In this role it is essential that the candidate promote a culture of assessment that allows the department to document its value and impact to the University and make evidence based decisions.

The Library is transitioning to a team-based approach integrating technology through all aspects of the delivery of library services. As a team member, the successful candidate will engage faculty, staff and students by exploring innovative technologies for practical application to enhance services within the Research Commons. This individual will participate in the library’s current instructional program. In a team environment, the selected candidate will participate in the delivery of educational programs that support and promote the use of new technology.

The Assessment Librarian also serves as part of a team providing research, reference and consultation services.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develops assessment recommendations for information literacy in collaboration with subject librarians
  • Aligns LIS assessment planning and activities with university assessment practices and curricular needs
  • Identifies, evaluates, and applies technologies essential to excellent information literacy instruction
  • Participates in reference services
All LIS faculty and staff are responsible for working collaboratively to achieve University and LIS goals and objectives.

Terms of Appointment
Full-time, 12-month term beginning Spring 2018 with possibility of renewal.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.L.S. or equivalent degree in information science or informatics from an American Library Association-accredited library/information school
  • Demonstrated interest in qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as their appropriate analytical counterparts.
  • Proven ability utilizing software for data organization and analysis (e.g., Excel, Access, SPSS, or NVivo).
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching, and designing web-based instructional materials (e.g., LibGuides, video tutorials, Zoom)
  • Monitor knowledge of emerging trends, best practices, and pedagogical principles in assessment and instructional design, including but not limited to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to solve problems
  • Proven interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, students, and staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience or relevant graduate coursework in library assessment
  • Experience in an academic library
  • Ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage projects
