ABOUT THE POSITION
Long Beach Community College district is currently seeking one (1) full-time tenure track Anthropology Instructor commencing with the fall 2018 semester. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching cultural anthropology. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. Faculty positions support diverse student communities in achieving their educational goals. As one of the most diverse community college districts in southern California, we offer a wide range of opportunities in transfer, general education, vocational and occupational programs.
The ideal applicant for this position embraces the overall mission of Long Beach City college, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence, and student learning and success through the work of Cultural Anthropology.
- Master's degree in anthropology or archaeology OR a bachelor's degree in either of the above AND a master's degree in sociology, biological sciences, forensic sciences, genetics, or paleontology OR meet equivalent qualifications established by the District, AND
- Evidence of demonstrated cultural competency and enthusiasm in serving the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial, and cultural backgrounds of community college student populations, including students with differing abilities (physical and/or learning), as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices within the classroom.
- Educational and/or instructional preparation in cultural anthropology as evidenced by the topic and subject matter of the applicant's Master's thesis or Doctoral dissertation; preferably with ethnographic field experience.
- Research experience must have both academic and workforce applicability.
- Candidates with a Ph.D. or in the process of obtaining their Ph.D.
- Recent experience teaching cultural anthropology to college students, especially at the community college level.
- Evidence of an ability to address and adapt to the instructional needs of varying student levels, using a variety of innovative, culturally relevant and responsive teaching strategies to encourage retention and student success in a wide range of anthropology courses.
- Evidence of active participation in the field of cultural anthropology.
- Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.
- Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
- Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of the college.
- Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work with computers, and other technologies in order to provide high-quality classroom and lab instruction.
- Willingness to develop new curricula and innovative materials for instruction.

Salary range of $65,624.42 - $87,916.71 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed.
