UNR, founded in 1874, is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education and is a constitutionally established land-grant university. The Carnegie Foundation classifies it as a comprehensive doctoral institution with balanced arts & sciences/professions and a research university with high research activity. It is in the midst of a period of growth with student enrollment nearing 22,000 students. Over the past four years UNR has added 217 new faculty positions and has a goal of adding a total of 400 by 2021. UNR offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including selected doctoral and professional studies. By fostering creative and scholarly activity, it encourages and supports faculty research and application of that research to state, national, and global problems. The University provides students the opportunity for study inside and outside the classroom and continues to develop new ways of thinking and preparing for the future. UNR’s commitment to increasing diversity amongst its faculty, students, and staff is indicated as a priority for the institution in its strategic plan. The University recognizes and embraces the critical importance of diversity in preparing an increasingly diverse student body for global citizenship and is committed to a culture of excellence, inclusion, and accessibility. Located approximately three hours away from San Francisco, CA, UNR’s beautiful campus is set on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in Reno, a growing nexus for the arts and technology. Reno is home to the Nevada Museum of Art, several theatre groups, symphony and chamber orchestras, a jazz festival, and many other cultural events. In addition to these attractions, the nearby Lake Tahoe area offers world-class skiing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. For more information about UNR, please visit
