Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:   

  • Provide academic, transfer, vocational, career, and personal counseling services with professionalism and knowledge of CalWORKs regulations.
  • Develop educational plans and monitor student progress.
  • Interpret and evaluate complex academic transcripts.
  • Demonstrate teaching methodologies in career development, self-assessment, study skills, and leadership courses.
  • Interpret with accuracy placement and career assessment results.
  • Implement articulation practices and transfer policies.
  • Conduct orientations and workshops related to student success and development.
  • Maintain contact and conduct referrals to social, educational, health, and community agencies.
  • Use technology tools as they relates to counselor functions.
  • Communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
  • Assignments may include teaching guidance courses and/or counseling duties scheduled during some evenings and at off-site campuses.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:    
The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Master’s degree or higher in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, educational psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR

  2. Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990)

  3. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of item 1 above. (Candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form in addition to all other required materials).

    NOTE: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and family Therapist (MFT) is an alternate qualification for this discipline (per title 5, 53410.1)

Experience Required:   

  • Two (2) years (full‐time or part‐time) recent counseling experience working with displaced homemakers, and/or underrepresented youth, and/or economically disadvantaged persons otherwise limited by social and economic circumstances in pursuing a post‐secondary education.
  • Familiarity with CalWORKs and TANF guidelines.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of various counseling theories, intervention strategies, and academic planning requirements necessary in serving CalWORKs students.

Desired Qualifications:    
Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of professional expertise on the basis of:

  • Commitment to shared governance culture, consensus building, and a team approach.
  • Evidence of effective planning, program development (preferably in a community college).
  • Knowledge and understanding of community college student financial aid programs, state subsidy programs (CalWORKs, TANF, unemployment, SSI, Section 8 housing), and/or other community resources delivering services to high‐risk, disenfranchised students.
  • Experience in working with various community agencies and local resources to provide supplemental services to students who are economically disadvantaged and academically under prepared or underrepresented populations.
  • Experience in the use of computer technology as it relates to teaching tools, student tracking systems, online educational planing, and/or career and transfer counseling activities.
  • Experience in community college counseling, including personal, career, transfer, and academic with a diverse student population.
