FIGS 102 - Intro to Healthcare Professions

Introduction to Healthcare Professions This FIG will introduce students who are interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare professions to the challenges, demands, and rewards of being a member of a healthcare profession. Content will include an overview of the various healthcare professions available at SMCC. The course will also include information related to the responsibilities of the professional in caring for people who have accessed the healthcare system, the competencies needed to be successful in a healthcare program, and strategies to promote effective learning. Students will participate in simulated activities related to care responsibilities that are necessary to be an effective member of the healthcare community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A baccalaureate degree in education or related field
  • Related teaching experience
  • Healthcare industry experience
  • Knowledge of college success skills, learning theories, and career development

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree
  • Community college teaching experience in academic skills, learning theories, or career development

HLTH 100 - Introduction to Health Sciences

This course explores the essential principles and professional qualities associated with people working in a variety of medical careers. Review of best practices for working collaboratively within the healthcare setting; changes in how medical care is provided throughout the United States; and a broad overview of currently available healthcare opportunities for medical professionals. Students will review current issues in healthcare and determine best medical practices for the protection of patients and medical professionals. Throughout the course pertinent aspects of medical ethics; diversity and cultural competence; maintenance of confidential patient information; and the use of electronic medical records will be explored.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an allied health or related field
  • Three years of professional experience within allied health
  • Prior teaching experience in a health related field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in an allied health or related field
  • Previous on-line teaching experience
  • Knowledge of Blackboard use for on-line coursework

SECTIONS/DAYS/TIMES:
M, W August 27 - December 15 1:30 p.m.- 2:45 p.m. South Portland

HLTH 155 - Pharmacology

This course is designed to provide students with a broad knowledge base of drug therapy. Emphasis is placed on preparing students to safely administer medications to patients (in other clinical courses). Basic pharmacological concepts provide students with essential information related to principles of pharmacology, clinical applications, and biopsychosocial aspects. Lifespan considerations are included within the essential information. Students also focus on major drug categories and a review of body systems. There is not a clinical component for this course.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One of the following:

  • Licensed Pharmacist
  • Registered Nurse – Master’s Preferred, Bachelor’s Required
  • Licensed NP or PA
  • Licensed Physician

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Community College teaching experience
  • Experience in teaching Pharmacology
  • Experience prescribing and / or administration of medications

M, W August 27 - December 15 3:00 p.m.- 4:15 p.m. South Portland
