Under direction from the Director of Financial Aid, leads, oversees, and participates in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for providing financial aid assistance and recommending available alternatives for students; processes and verifies student financial aid applications; and develops and awards student financial aid packages in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures, regulations and guidelines.

This is the advanced journey level class in the Financial Aid Specialist series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including the provision of functional and technical supervision over lower level financial aid staff and administration of the Federal Perkins Loan Program and Due Diligence procedures. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services, and activities of a college financial aid program.
  • Principles of lead supervision and training.
  • Methods and techniques of advising students regarding financial aid options and programs.
  • Federal, state, and local laws, policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertaining to student financial aids.
  • Methods and techniques of public relations.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Specialized financial aid software, including PowerFaids.
  • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Ability to:

  • Lead, organize, and review the work of staff.
  • Independently perform the most difficult financial assistance functions.
  • Identify student needs and assist students in locating financial alternatives.
  • Analyze and verify a variety of financial data and evaluate student ability to pay for education.
  • Prepare and award well balanced financial aid packages based upon determined needs.
  • Interpret, explain and apply federal, state and local laws, regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures applicable to financial aid, including those affecting the Federal Perkins Loan Program and the Due Diligence process.
  • Interpret and apply District procedures and policies pertaining to financial aid.
  • Understand and effectively operate electronic financial aid processing software systems.
  • Respond to difficult inquiries and requests from students regarding financial aid options and programs.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Compile and analyze data and prepare related reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field.

Four years of increasingly responsible experience in a college financial aid office, including at least one year of experience in packaging student awards.
