Indigenous Studies and/or Black Diaspora

The Department of Social Justice and Community Studies (SJCS) at Saint Mary’s University, on the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.
We seek a critically engaged scholar in the area of Indigenous Studies and/or Black Diaspora Studies with a demonstrated research commitment to knowledges and methodologies grounded in Indigenous worldviews and/or actively engaged with critiques of anti-Blackness.
The Department of SJCS houses a broad range of scholarly interests in Social Justice and Community Studies. Central to the Department’s work is an emphasis on social justice and community engagement, and a commitment to advancing rigorous scholarly understandings of how local and global social realities are shaped by unequal power relations.
As a new Department, the successful candidate will play a key role in building teaching capacity in the Department’s new Major and Honours programs.

The Faculty of Arts is particularly interested in scholars whose teaching in the Department can also contribute to the Arts interdisciplinary programs.
The successful candidate will have experience with anti-colonial/decolonizing community- or grassroots-based social change movements and will be able to teach undergraduate courses in community studies.
They will either hold a PhD, or be ABD and complete their PhD by the position start date of July 1, 2019.
