The Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Kentucky invites applications for the William Robert Mills endowed Chair in Equine Infectious Diseases at the associate/full professorship level. The focus of this endowed chair position is the advancement of knowledge and understanding of equine infectious diseases emphasizing the disciplines of bacteriology, virology, pathology, or immunology. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized, externally funded research program utilizing interdisciplinary approaches to investigate infectious disease(s) of relevance to the equine industry. The research program will represent approximately 85% of the distribution of effort of the appointee and can be focused on basic, translational (e.g. diagnostic, therapeutic) or applied (e.g. epidemiology, and formulation of prevention and control programs) research questions. Additional expectations will include participation in teaching undergraduate or graduate level courses consistent with the candidate's background, to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars, contribute to extension and outreach programs, serve on academic committees, and to communicate with stakeholder groups. The candidate will be encouraged to establish intradepartmental research collaborations with faculty members in the Department of Veterinary Science, as well as interdepartmental research collaborations with faculty in other colleges and departments at the university. Overall, the successful candidate is expected to complement existing equine research programs and bring novel research direction and expertise in the area of equine infectious diseases to the department and enhance the national and international recognition of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center and the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The candidate will be expected to present at national and international scientific meetings, publish research findings in peer-refereed scientific journals, as well as write lay articles for equine industry media sources.

About us: The Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center is located on the University of Kentucky Lexington Campus in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The mission of the Gluck Equine Research Center is scientific discovery, education, and dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of the health and welfare of horses. The Gluck Equine Research Center affords a stimulating environment emphasizing the application of basic and applied research methodologies to the health and reproductive needs of the horse. An internationally recognized group of faculty with expertise spanning a wide range of scientific fields pertinent to the health and welfare of the horse and actively supported by equine veterinarians, horse industry and membership of the Gluck Equine Research Foundation, provide an environment that is unique for conducting equine research. Additional departmental units include the Genetic Testing at Gluck Laboratory and the UK Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which provide additional opportunities for research endeavors. Departmental faculty also participate in the University of Kentucky's Equine Programs, a partnership between the College of Agriculture and the horse industry established through the efforts of the Gluck Equine Research Foundation, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, and College of Agriculture faculty and administrators. Job Requirements

Qualifications: PhD and DVM or equivalent degree, as well as demonstrated evidence of a nationally and internationally recognized research program in equine infectious diseases and ability to secure external funding. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program that advances equine science and the care/health of horses. Board certification in a relevant discipline is desirable.
