Associate Director of Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source Sr Res Assoc
Main Function: The Associate Director of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) will work closely with a CHESS Administrator and a team of senior personnel to provide oversight for scientific and technical programs, facility management and operations, user programs, financial management, external and internal academic relations, industrial relations, and other tasks delegated by the Director. Working with the Director and various advisory boards, the Associate Director will assist in developing future programs – including procedures, resources, organization and funding requirements. The Associate Director reports to the Director of CHESS, substitutes for the Director in the latter’s absence, and also carries other responsibilities as delegated by the director.
- Oversee CHESS’s scientific program, including identifying scientific priorities, coordinating resources to accomplish goals, reporting and communicating research accomplishments, managing relations between research groups and funding agencies, and working to build and sustain a portfolio of laboratory and research funding.
- Establish procedures for the utilization of scientific staff and equipment resources to ensure that they are used properly, safely, equitably, and within the charter of the facility.
- In combination with the CHESS Administrator, act as point of contact for students, post docs, staff, scientists, etc.
- Supervise staff scientists covering diverse research programs including but not limited to biology, engineering, and materials sciences.
- Assist the Director in obtaining funding for the facility by drafting, writing, and providing input for proposals to federal, state, and private sources. Assist the director in improving capabilities of the facilities and initiating and executing other activities that provide for a dynamic and highly successful program.
- Lead and oversee funding agency-specific reporting requirements, e.g., creating reports and highlights on a monthly-to-yearly basis (i.e. send highlights to the National Science Foundation).
- Provide the Director, our funding partners, users, and other constituents with regular reports on the status of the facility. Be available to present such reports to the executive board, user committee, sponsoring organization, etc.
- Expected to work in collaboration with the CHESS Administrator to advise the Director and make recommendations on the long-term plans for the facility – in procedures, programs, resources, organization, and funding requirements. Carry out the policy and programs established by the Director and the External Advisory Committee.
PhD or equivalent degree in a field of science or engineering. 10+ years of research and leadership experience demonstrating exceptional achievement. Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment. Able to receive direction and to communicate effectively across all research groups in the laboratory. Must work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.
Preferred Requirements Include:
- Deep experience at a characterization and/or user facility.
- Experience with governmental agencies and funding sources, proposal preparation, and grant management.
- Experience in industrial research and development.
- Experience as a (co)PI.
- Experience in administration in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Supervisory experience.
- Excellent communication (written & oral), interpersonal, leadership, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to take initiative, resolve conflict and work in a collaborative manner.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, handling sensitive, confidential material with discretion and tact.
- Commitment to continuous learning.
- Technical knowledge of the equipment and diverse research that occurs in a synchrotron x-ray facility.
- Experience with database imaging.
