Microbeam Imaging and Analysis Specialist
Carleton University, Earth Sciences Department


Carleton University, Canada's Capital University, is seeking a qualified and highly motivated candidate to fill the key role of Microbeam Imaging and Analysis Specialist with the Department of Earth Sciences.

The Incumbent is responsible to the co-directors of the Microbeam Imaging and Micro-Analysis Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Laboratories’ microbeam facilities (electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope, micro X-ray fluorescence analyzer, X-ray diffractometer) and ancillary preparation equipment.

The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the upgrade of hardware and software related to the development of the research potential of the Laboratory.

The incumbent handles and is responsible for external contracts, and trains users of the Microbeam and Micro-Analysis Laboratory which is available to the entire University community, members of the Ottawa Carleton Geoscience Centre, a joint institute with University of Ottawa, and also to researchers in academe, government and industry from Canada and abroad.

The incumbent provides "expert" technical advice and guidance, including assistance with analytical data interpretation, to all users of the Microbeam Imaging and Micro-Analysis Laboratory. This frequently involves participation in research and development of new analytical methods, and collaboration in the publication of analytical data in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Job Requirements

A M.Sc. degree in a relevant field (e.g., Materials or Mineral Science, Geoscience, Chemistry or Physics), with a comprehensive understanding of the principles of microbeam imaging and analysis including electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy as applied to of natural (geological) and synthetic materials and four years relevant work experience in the use and maintenance of electron and X-ray microbeam instruments.
