Chief Development Officer
D'Youville College

The Chief Development Officer is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for securing financial support from a portfolio of current donors and donor prospects. Responsibilities include identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major donors as well as designing development strategies for the college.

The Chief Development Officer reports to the President, and is also a key player in the DíYouville College advancement team and will significantly contribute to the organizationís annual revenue goals. The Chief Development Officer works independently and as a member of the Advancement team, as an advisor to Presidentís Council, provides direction to the President and Vice Presidents to help with management of their respective portfolios.


  • Maintain fast-paced schedule of face-to-face visits to steward current donors and to engage new major donor prospects;
  • Conduct prospect cultivation, directly and in cooperation with Alumni Engagement, the Annual Fund,Presidentís Council, senior leadership and Trustees;
  • Conduct major gift prospect identification through wealth screening scores, member analytics, self-selection and community research;
  • Manage stewardship strategy and activity, measured using moves management system;
  • Write individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship letters proposals and reports;
  • Manage major donor communications, and coordinate major donor cultivation events with alumni and other prospects nationwide, including exclusive small events and private meetings;
  • Serve as a key staff member for campaigns and other major gift funding initiatives;
  • Work directly with the President and VP of Institutional Advancement regarding all capital projects and campaign specific activities, including but not limited to: development of the case for support, resourcing and managing recruited volunteers, identifying and developing sequencing of prospects, ensuring development of all needed materials, including research and briefing papers, major gift prospectuses, needed correspondence from Presidentís office and driving overall campaign activity;
  • Inform President, Vice Presidents and other senior management of key prospect strategies and performance of direct reports, including goal achievement status;
  • Work closely with Marketing and Communications, events and annual fund teams to incorporate major gifts into development and marketing plans;
  • Work closely with senior leadership to provide strategic information and guidance to assist in developing goals and objectives essential to the College;
  • Develop strategies for solicitations, utilizing institutional leadership appropriate to the level of solicitation;
  • Create and manage a plan of overall stewardship of current donors, including strategies to grow the relationships going forward.

The successful candidate will be committed to supporting the mission, vision and strategic initiatives of DíYouville College. The candidate will have drive and ambition, excellent analytical and oral communication skills, technical skill, evidence of significant fundraising success, deep dedication to the mission and vision of the college and be someone who thrives in an especially creative and fast paced environment.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 5-10 years of successful and progressive fundraising and direct-solicitation and experience;
  • Non-profit, higher education or other educational institution background;
  • Proven track record of personally closing five and six figure gifts;
  • Able to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and externally;
  • Superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; proven presentation abilities.
  • Experience with philanthropic foundations;
  • Ability to relate academic, research and program goals to external audience;
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly diverse and inclusive institution;
  • Strong leadership and planning skills;
  • Flexibility in work hours; this position requires some weekend, evening work and travel.


  • Bachelorís degree
  • Major gift/capital campaign experience
  • Experience establishing and executing priorities and achieving stated goals
  • Extensive experience working with volunteers and fundraising boards
  • Experience working with high net worth individuals, community leaders and executive level professionals.


  • Raiserís Edge/Blackbaud Net Community background
  • Planned giving knowledge and understanding
  • Familiarity of moves management system
  • Event/meeting planning background or experience
