The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a position at the rank of Lecturer in the Bilingual, ESL and Multicultural Education within the Language Literacy and Culture Concentration. This is a full-time, temporary, two-year position, with the possibility of renewal. The preferred start date is September 1, 2018.

Responsibilities: This two-year position seeks a highly talented faculty member who would assist with pre-service bilingual teacher education and ESL specialist preparation. Specifically, the work entails teaching eight courses per year (four in the fall, four in the spring); supervision of clinical teachers associated with our ESL licensure program; attendance at faculty meetings to collaboratively participate in the ongoing administration and development of programs in the area of bilingual, ESL, and multicultural education; completion of all licensure paperwork associated with degree programs; advisement of students in licensure program.

The Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC) community brings together faculty and students with interests in the areas of first and second language acquisition, ESL, bilingual and world language education, reading, writing, children's literature, multicultural education, multiliteracies, oral communication, information processing, critical thinking, media literacy, multimodality, creativity/innovation, global awareness, cultural competency, problem-solving, teamwork/collaboration, self-directed learning and leadership. We strive to create a dynamic synergy among these areas in order to better address the needs of all learners in a diverse society. The LLC community promotes adopting a scholarly engagement approach to research; a teacher-as-researcher stance to professional development; a critical and functional view of language and language learning; and a recursive focus on issues concerning social justice and the institutional and political contexts influencing public education.

The campus is a member of the Five College Consortium along with Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and is also a member of the Academic Career Network, a resource for dual career couples. The College is NCATE-approved and offers a comprehensive program leading to Master's and doctoral degrees. Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited university in bilingual education, applied linguistics, educational linguistics, second language acquisition, dual language learning, ESL, or equivalent related area;
  • Evidence of bilingualism/biliteracy and/or teaching/learning in bilingual/multiliterate contexts;
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience in college-level bilingual/ESL/multicultural teacher education courses that develop a deep understanding of critical sociocultural perspectives, ESL/bilingual methods and assessment, critical multiliteracies, second language development related to academic literacy student identity, and social transformation in an increasingly globalized world; and, research, teaching, and/or community involvement that demonstrates a commitment to equity and diversity.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Successful experience teaching a second language in a P-12 setting or related second language position, preferably a bilingual/multilingual setting;
  • ESL/Bilingual Course/program development experience with critical multiliteracies and culturally sustaining pedagogies;
  • Online teaching experience using instructional technology platforms and/or social media;
  • Proficiency to function at a professional level in a language other than English in all modalities (writing/speaking/reading);
  • Successful experiences engaging in collaborative decision-making to innovate, design and teach courses, and supervise clinical teachers associated with licensure programs, multilingualism and multiliteracy in the development of a Dual Language Certificate;
  • Record of a strong commitment to social justice and multiculturalism through community and school partnerships.

Normal starting salary for full-time lecturer start at $52,000 with additional consideration given to qualifications and experience of candidate. Future appointments following this two-year hire are contingent upon the availability of funds.
