Associate Research Scientist
Columbia University

The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science in New York City invites applications for a Research Scientist position to work in the Im Research Group.

The successful candidate will support this research through laser and energy-beam-induced processing of materials to lead and manage a multiple-company-participating project on spot-beam crystallization (SBC) of thin Si films for the manufacture of advanced OLED displays and other electronic applications.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. (or equivalent professional degree) in physics/applied physics or a related field is required along with at least 3 years of post-doctoral experience. Prior experience with laser-irradiation systems and micro-structural characterization tools essential.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in experimental physics in one or more of the following areas: pulsed-laser processing of materials, electron or other energy-beam-induced melting and solidification of thin films or layers, or phase transformation/microstructural evolution-based processing of materials, microstructural characterization of polycrystalline materials using advanced electron microscopes and other characterization tools.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to (1) generate technical and scientific reports and proposals, (2) author scientific publications and papers, and (3) deliver contributed and invited presentations.
  • Demonstrated capability to (1) work together with multiple industrial partners on the development and production of new material processing methods, (2) define a well-conceived project and lead and manage a team of researchers consisting of students and other staff members, and (3) conduct independent and original work on energy-beam-induced processing of materials.
  • Design, development, operation, and maintenance of energy-beam-irradiation systems.
  • Knowledge of analytical and computational methods for heat-transfer and phase-transition analysis.
  • Knowledge of material processing via location-controlled irradiation of thin films and layers
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics relevant to understanding transformations in condensed systems
  • Design, construction, and operation of in situ analysis systems for investigating beam-induced changes in materials
  • Experience in material characterization using various tools (e.g., TEM, SEM, AFM, EBSD, etc.).
