Job Description/Responsibilities

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Library and Information Services invites applications from dynamic, proactive, and service-oriented candidates for the position of First Year Engagement and Retention Librarian, Visiting Professor.

This is a temporary position and is available immediately. The appointment will last for a period of twelve months. In the future, the position may become a tenure-track position, at that point, a national search will be conducted.

Reporting to the Interim Dean of Library and Information Services (LIS), the First Year Engagement and Retention Librarian has a focuses on student learning and success in the first year. The successful candidate is passionate about the intersections of student learning, critical thinking and the library.

The First Year Engagement and Retention Librarian is a key member of the Instruction Team who serves as the primary representative on matters of undergraduate persistence and retention, with emphasis on first year students, first generation students, and student success. This individual coordinates the Library’s participation in campus orientations, first year and writing courses and works collaboratively with LIS subject liaisons to actively shape the development of information literacy and research skills in first year disciplines. Working in concert with the Outreach Services and Assessment Librarians, the incumbent engages the Library in campus-wide discussions about undergraduate student success. The successful candidate will also participate in the full range of reference and instruction services.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinates a team of staff and graduate assistants who provide primary instruction for first year seminars and writing classes
  • Assists in managing the instruction calendar
  • Develops and participates in teaching research and information literacy skills to lower undergraduate students
  • Delivers library programs and services that target and improve first-year student retention and student success including campus orientations activities
  • Offers training for the library (and others) interested in developing innovative and effective methods for teaching and engaging with first-year students
  • Working in consultation with the Visiting Assessment Librarian, assists with assessment, outreach, marketing, and online learning initiatives
  • Provides reference assistance
  • Schedule may include evenings and weekends
All LIS faculty and staff are responsible for working collaboratively to achieve University and LIS goals and objectives.

Terms of Appointment
Full-time, 12-month term beginning Spring 2018 with possibility of renewal.

Salary
We welcome early career librarians. Competitive and determined by evaluating qualifications. Salary is dependent upon post-MLS experience and credentials. Excellent benefits program.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.L.S. or equivalent degree in information science from an American Library Association-accredited library/information school.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university
  • Mentor and teach evaluative, critical thinking and information-seeking skills to first-year students.
  • Strong capacity for working enthusiastically, flexibly, and creatively in a student-centered environment.
  • Ability to engage with students inside and outside of the Libraries.
  • Current knowledge of the application of technology to the design and delivery of research services and instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated work experience in an academic library.
  • Degree in Education or related field.
  • Knowledge of information literacy theory and practice, various teaching methodologies, and learning styles, especially active learning and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and their applications in academic libraries.
  • Creativity and experience designing instructional and informational materials, both in print and online.
  • Experience with outreach and marketing services to students and faculty.
  • Experience with needs assessment and program development and the ability to provide leadership in project management.
  • Familiarity with Blackboard course management software.
