Under the general supervision of the Division Dean for the Agriculture, Science and Mathematics Division, the primary responsibility of these positions are to teach community college major and non-major biology courses at the Mountain House Campus, with the specific topic areas defined under Minimum Qualifications and Desirable Qualifications. There are two vacancies, both at the Mountain House Campus.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Instruct courses in Biology in accordance with credit course outlines approved by the Board of Trustees.
  2. Maintain expertise in current teaching methods, discipline knowledge, and discipline specific technologies.
  3. Assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling services and/or tutorial assistance. Track student learning outcomes and maintain records of student learning outcomes.
  4. Participate in the departmental process of curriculum review, modification, and the assessment of student learning outcomes in order to make the program successful.
  5. Support the Division Dean in cooperating with campus and community groups to provide programs, courses, and information relevant to the needs of the students and various programs.
  6. Coordinate with other faculty in the selection of textbooks, audiovisual and other instructional materials.
  7. Complete various reporting procedures as required for student evaluation, course reporting, equipment and supply purchases and tracking, and budget development.
  8. Assist the Division Dean in the preparation of required reports by providing requested information.
  9. Attend various departmental, divisional and campus-wide activities and events as required.
  10. Plan and complete approved professional development flex activities each semester.
  11. Perform other necessary duties as assigned by the Division Dean and as outlined in Board Policy.

Job Requirements



  • Master's or Doctorate Degree in the biological sciences.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach college level courses (including laboratories) in either (1) microbiology and majors general biology or (2) anatomy and physiology and human biology.


  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning and demonstrated commitment to promoting the success of all students in an open-access learning environment.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic backgrounds, cultures, preparation, learning styles and/or disabilities.
  • Demonstrated interest and exemplary teaching experience in biological sciences (major and non-major), including both large lecture and laboratory instruction.
  • Expertise in the use of computers for teaching and management of online course information. Familiarity and ability to teach in a distance learning environment.
  • Ability to teach in a technologically rich environment.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours to meet the needs of our diverse student population
  • Commitment to professional growth and development, to innovation and improvement of teaching, and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the classroom in a shared governance environment.

Microbiology/General Biology Position:

  • Demonstrated excellence in preparation and knowledge in general and medical microbiology, and general biology for majors.
  • Knowledge of standard biosafety guidelines designed to minimize the potential risk to students in teaching laboratories and the community.
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach cell and molecular biology and genetics in the context of a majors general biology course.
  • Expertise in setting up and conducting student laboratory exercises appropriate to the specific course content.
  • Demonstrated interest and exemplary teaching experience in human anatomy, human physiology and human biology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and motivate pre-professional nursing and allied health students.
  • Expertise in setting up and conducting student laboratory exercises appropriate to the specific course content.
