Job Description

The Counselor is responsible for engaging a diverse student population in providing a variety of counseling services that maximize learning and success. The position works collaboratively with college faculty, staff and with service providers in the cposition ommunity. The counselor will offer short term counseling for students with behavioral, adjustment and/or learning difficulties that interfere with academic success. This position provides crisis intervention and emergency referral for students in immediate need of professional counseling assistance. 

 

 

The work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Flexibility is required to provide programs and activities on all CSM campuses.

 

College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the college's staff and students. The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History Check.

Job Requirements

Required Skills
  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology or related discipline required.
  • Professional licensure and/or certification in Maryland (LCPC or LCSW-C or six months from licensure.)
  • Three years of experience providing personal counseling, intervention and referral to include substance abuse counseling for college age students, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers and community organizations.
  • Ability to work with professional integrity and discretion.
  • Capacity and willingness to accept duties with initiative and resourcefulness.
  • Knowledge of computer data systems and related equipment.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Works with a diverse student population.
