Job Description

Surgeon in Chief and Chair
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak (Royal Oak)
Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak (Royal Oak) and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) invite applications and nominations for the position of Surgeon in Chief at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and Chair of the Department of Surgery at OUWB. This is an exciting opportunity for a surgeon leader to join one of the highest volume surgical centers in the country, performing over 50,000 surgeries per year, and a young medical school designed to transform medical education by emphasizing holistic physician development – a “liberal arts medical education” that is grounded in evidence-based medical science. Reporting to the Royal Oak Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Surgeon in Chief will have oversight for the surgical clinical enterprise at Royal Oak, with all academic departments and sections accountable to the incoming Chief for surgical clinical activity. The Chief will also hold a faculty appointment within OUWB and serve as Chair of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, leading medical student, resident and fellowship and continuing medical education programs and reporting to the OUWB dean.

In these roles, the next Chief will be expected to sustain and champion the clinical excellence of Royal Oak and OUWB while strengthening research and education activities across the department, hospital, and medical school. Royal Oak is the largest of eight hospitals operated by Beaumont Health and among the busiest hospitals in the nation, with 1,100 beds typically running at nearly-full capacity and over $1.4B in annual net revenues. In 2016, U.S. News and World Report ranked four surgical specialties – heart, orthopedics, GI, and neurosurgery – as top in the state of Michigan, and Royal Oak is home to the fastest growing general surgery robotics program in world. Beaumont Health is the exclusive clinical affiliate for OUWB, and nearly 114 surgeons are on the OUWB faculty. As Chair of the Department of Surgery at OUWB, this individual will be responsible for the Department's delivery of outstanding and innovative surgery education in the undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education domains.

Job Requirements

The next Chief will be a strong and innovative leader who is galvanized by the opportunity to work with hospital and OUWB leadership to push the clinical and academic enterprise forward, maintaining its distinctive strengths while continually striving toward future success. Candidates must have an M.D. or equivalent and be Board certified, with additional experience in advanced management preferred. The incoming Chief must demonstrate a minimum of five years of experience in operations, financial management, and leadership in a hospital, academic healthcare center, or academic group practice environment, with experience in a medical center preferable with affiliated private practices desired. Experience in medical staff functions, working knowledge of hospital operations, quality improvement, and strategic planning is essential. The successful candidate must also qualify for an appointment at the School of Medicine at the rank of Professor.
