The Albert E. Jenner, Jr., Memorial Law Library of the University of Illinois invites applications and nominations for the position of Research & Instruction Law Librarian at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor (for one or possibly two positions).  This is an exciting position for someone interested in working closely with faculty and students, teaching legal research courses, and joining a team of creative, dedicated colleagues.

Responsibilities include active participation in research support for law school faculty and students; providing reference to faculty, students, staff, the University community, and the public; teaching legal research courses; and assisting in supporting technology based-services for research, law library operations improvement, and content creation, such as digital initiatives and services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and Reference Support
  • Provides research and reference services to law school faculty, students and staff as well as the University community, bench and bar, and members of the public;
  • Assists in the creation of subject-specific research guides and library user guides; and
  • Assists in the online promotion of faculty scholarship, student symposia, and student journals.
Teaching and Instruction

  • Teaches legal research courses and potentially other courses;
  • Conducts training sessions and workshops for faculty and students on various research and technology topics; and
  • Participates in faculty and student outreach and special events to promote the law library and its services.
Technology Projects

  • Assists in developing law faculty support programs for data creation, preservation, curation, and presentation;
  • Assists in developing and maintaining the content, styling, and electronic services provided by the law library’s Lib-guides, lib-answers and other lib-suite products; and
  • Assists in developing digital initiatives and innovative library projects.
Collection Management

  • Participates in collection development by identifying new titles for acquisition;
  • Assists in maintaining budget statistics on types of resources both for the collection and the library’s other purchases; and
  • Collaborates with librarians and staff to assess usefulness and quality of library collections, and to resolve collection problems.
Training and Supervision

  • Participates in recruiting, hiring, training, and managing the library’s graduate assistants and circulation student assistants; and Collaborates with the library’s research assistant supervisor(s) to allocate project assignments.
Service and Scholarship

  • Serves on law school and library committees, working groups, and task forces; and
  • Participates in local, regional, and national professional organizations.
 

Job Requirements

Preferred

  1. Excellent organization and time management skills.
  2. Knowledge of emerging issues and technologies in legal research.
  3. Knowledge of scholarly communication issues.
  4. Knowledge of law school curriculum and resource needs.
  5. Two years of experience in in-person reference in an academic law library preferred.
 
Required

  1. MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program and J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively independently and as a team member.
  3. Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, and presentation skills for communicating in multiple formats with a wide range of constituencies.

The Law Library Research & Instruction Law Librarian Teaching Professor is a full-time, 12 month non-tenure track Specialized Law Library Faculty position with the possibility of a long-term contract.  The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
