The Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences (IKBSAS) at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus, invites applications for the position of Head - Department of Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science http://epp.ok.ubc.ca/welcome.html. The appointment is for a renewable five-year term, beginning on July 1, 2018 or soon thereafter.

Applicants are required to have expertise in one or more of the program areas represented in the department (i.e., Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science) and must be eligible for appointment as a tenured Full Professor at the University of British Columbia. They must show evidence of sustained scholarly and teaching excellence, proven ability to attract external funding appropriate to career stage, as well as solid academic leadership, including administrative experience in a university setting.

The Head reports directly to the Dean, serves on the Faculty’s leadership team, and provides administrative and academic leadership for the department by facilitating the development of the unit’s strategic direction and overseeing its day-to-day operations. The individual has primary responsibility for: supervising, mentoring and evaluating faculty and staff; enabling a rich educational experience and success for students; planning and managing the department’s budget; facilitating program organization and delivery; undertaking unit reviews; serving on Faculty and University committees; fostering a collegial working environment; and representing, promoting, and enhancing the department and its programs within the Faculty, the University, and the external community. As a faculty member, the Head will be expected to maintain an active and productive research program, and to sustain a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, learning, and mentoring.

Candidates must have a demonstrable commitment to both the disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarly and teaching ethos represented by the department and must exhibit strong interpersonal, intercultural, and organizational skills and competencies. They are expected to have an established record of mentoring colleagues; championing equity, diversity, and inclusion; supporting collegial and transparent governance; fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability; facilitating a congenial working and learning environment; and providing visionary intellectual direction. Intimate knowledge of, and direct experience with, the management of (re)appointment, tenure, and promotion processes will be valuable assets, as will familiarity with budget and strategic planning.
