The distinguished photographer-educator will work in a fertile environment for aesthetic and critical engagement and expand the photography program in the context of a major research university and a vibrant intellectual community.

The University of Wisconsin Art Department is nationally ranked #15 in Overall Fine Arts Program and #1 in Printmaking from the U.S. News and World Report. The current student population for the department is 200 Undergraduates, 60 Graduates, and 250 Certificate students. The Art Department is committed to teaching art in the context of a major research university and a vibrant intellectual community. Its mission is based on the premise that art is the nexus of all the humanities and that creative expression in the visual arts has provided some of the most enduring contributions to society and culture. The Art Department strives to provide both a fertile and challenging environment for aesthetic and critical engagement, and the technical skills necessary for the practice of art in the changing landscape of the twenty-first century. It encourages innovation and cross-disciplinary activity, and believes that students should utilize the vast academic resources of the university to inform and deepen their artistic vision.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

  • Build and maintain a studio practice at a nationally recognized level
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to students
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate students (Non-Majors, Certificate, Majors: BA, BFA, MA, and MFA)
  • A successful candidate is expected to participate in the culture of the art department, which often extends beyond the classroom and normal teaching hours
  • Committee Service with MA and MFA candidates
  • Collegially work in within a large vibrant Art Department of 30 fulltime faculty
  • Teach multi-level photography courses: Darkroom (Film), Digital (Printing, Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, etc.), Lighting, View Camera, Alternative Processes, and Advanced Photography Seminars and Special Topics
  • Create new curriculum, including online courses
  • Participate in the supervision and advising of Photography Lecturers and Lab Monitors
  • Participate in management of area budget
  • Participate in supervising the use and maintenance of a wet-based darkroom, digital lab, and photography facilities

Job Requirements

Candidates must hold a MFA degree in Art with a specialization in photography or equivalent experience.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks candidates with distinguished exhibition and professional achievements. They must have the ability to engage with a multidisciplinary Art Department is a significant aspect of the position. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching comprehensive understanding of historical and contemporary art /photography theory and practice. College level teaching preferred but not required.

Candidates with new or anticipated MFA degrees will have research under way that possesses results through exhibitions or publications, and will have presentation skills that suggest future excellence in teaching.
