Job Description

President
Lock Haven University

Lock Haven University, a key institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, seeks an executive leader with a record of success who can embrace and build upon the history and mission of this distinctive University as its next President. The University looks for a team-builder with a vision for public higher education and its challenges and opportunities; habits of teamwork, financial and political acumen; and a commitment to diversity.

The Institution: Since its founding in 1870 as Central State Normal School, Lock Haven University, one of 14 institutions in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, has been a leader in public higher education. Long-recognized for its academic rigor and its excellence in teacher preparation, “The Haven” now offers a full array of 60 degree programs, including 49 undergraduate majors and certifications, 47 minors, and eight graduate programs, on its attractive 175-acre main campus and its branch campus in Clearfield, PA. More than 3,400 undergraduate students and nearly 350 graduate learners enroll annually, and the University employs 280 staff members and 219 full-time faculty, of whom 83% hold earned doctorates. All courses are taught by faculty, and the student-faculty ratio is 18:1.

Fully accredited as a University, and holding prestigious discipline-specific accreditations for many of its programs, LHU is respected throughout the Commonwealth for its commitment to international learning and friendship through the LHU Institute for International Studies, a study abroad and exchange program. Location: Lock Haven University’s main campus is located on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in the scenic mountains of central Pennsylvania. The historic town of Lock Haven is home to approximately 10,000 residents and boasts a vital downtown with tree-lined streets and beautiful Victorian homes in a safe and quiet environment. The University and local Millbrook Playhouse offer many cultural amenities.

Experiencing four distinct seasons, the Susquehanna Valley region offers numerous, year-round outdoor activities, including active hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, kayaking, photography, skiing, and sightseeing. Lock Haven is located within 30 miles of the diverse, small city of Williamsport (home of the Little League World Series) and the quintessential college town of State College (Penn State University). Central Pennsylvania combines the luxury and cost of living of a rural lifestyle with easy accessibility to urban environments. Lock Haven is four hours from New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Pittsburgh.

About the State System: Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education was established by statute on July 1, 1983, although the 14 universities that comprise the State System have a much longer history dating back to the 19th century. In fact, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was established more than 175 years ago, and boasts the honor of being the oldest Historically Black College/University in the nation. The “youngest” of the State System universities, East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, was founded in 1893. Today, the State System serves about 105,000 students, making it the largest provider of higher education in Pennsylvania. It also employs approximately 12,000 faculty and staff, making it one of the largest employers in the Commonwealth.

A 20-member Board of Governors is responsible for oversight of the State System. The Board establishes broad educational, fiscal, and personnel policies. Among other tasks, the Board appoints the chancellor and each university president, approves new academic programs, sets tuition, and coordinates and approves the annual State System operating budget. Additionally, each university has a Council of Trustees that serves as a policy-setting board for their university. Local alumni and representatives from the business community, professions, education, and local government typically serve as members.

The State System leverages its power to share services such as payroll, legal counsel, IT, construction management, procurement, and others, which provides greater efficiency than if each university and the Office of the Chancellor had to fully staff these functions on its own. These services are typically housed at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania or in nearby facilities.
