Assistant or Associate Professor in Liberal Studies
Grand Valley State University

We are seeking applications for an assistant or associate professor in the Liberal Studies Department, Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies, Grand Valley State University.

The Liberal Studies Department is home to the interdisciplinary Liberal Studies major and Accelerated Leadership program, undergraduate Religious Studies major & minor, and the Intercultural Training Certificate program.

Our faculty teach a wide variety of courses to majors/minors/certificate students and serve many more students through the university-wide General Education program in addition to partnering with other interdisciplinary programs.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated teaching expertise in one or more of the following: community-based learning, civic and public spaces, social innovation and change, boundary spanning, social institutions, social movements, social justice, and social processes.
  • Demonstrates a strong scholarly record that values interdisciplinary and publicly engaged research in one or more of the areas named above.
  • Commitment to civic/community engagement (e.g. collaborative inquiry, emergent design, participatory research, action research, etc.).
  • Experience working with and understanding of underrepresented and diverse populations.
  • Strong potential for teaching excellence at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses like LIB 341 (Leadership for Social Change) and LIB 323 (Design Thinking to Meet Real World Problems).
  • Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse student and community populations, including non-traditional/adult learners.
  • A completed PhD in a relevant field by August 2018.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated research experience and/or academic training in community-based learning.
  • Additional professional or applied experience, expertise, training, or certification in community-based practices.
  • Experience with liberal education and integrative learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of courses within the Liberal Studies core such as LIB 100 (Reflect, Connect, Engage), LIB 201 (Diversity in the U.S.), LIB 311 (Meaning), LIB 312 (Dialogue, Integration, and Action), and/or LIB 301 (Interdisciplinary Research Methods).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach one or more of the following advanced courses: LIB 320 (Voices of the Civil Rights Movement), LIB 322 (Wicked Problems of Sustainability), LIB 325 (LGBTQ Identities), LIB 331 (Person and Profession), LIB 342 (Food Matters), LIB 350 (The Immigrant Experience in the U.S.)
  • Ability to teach in both classroom and online environments.
  • Interest in working with non-traditional and adult learners.
