Position Description

The NDSU Landscape Architecture Program is a fully LAAB-accredited undergraduate program with a 34-year history of landscape architecture in a 100-year-old department. We are a growing program situated in the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. We offer collaborative teaching, research, and service learning across the Great Plains region that extends to the borders of Idaho and Washington. Our facilities are located in downtown Fargo. The Department is active in Community Design and Service Learning. NDSU is a research focused institution.

Our program is designed as a collaborative, studio-based, and interdisciplinary education in a vibrant urban setting. Our students create regionally focused projects that have immediate correlations to practice around the globe. The curriculum allows students to master a design foundation through leading technology, profession practice and theory-based thinking, along with the knowledge of building forms in the landscape.

The Assistant Professor position is a 9-month, tenure-track, full-time, benefited faculty position to begin in August 2018.

We are seeking candidates with excellent design abilities and focused research or creative activities. Teaching responsibilities include a lecture or seminar course and a design studio each semester.

Other activities include program and departmental governance, pursue research and scholarly activities, and advise students with their design thesis projects. Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Credentials, one of the following:
    • Master in Landscape Architecture (MLA), plus landscape architecture license OR;
    • Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA), plus a Master Degree in closely related field, plus landscape architecture license OR;
    • PhD in Landscape Architecture.
    [Professional licensure in-progress, second Master’s degree in-progress or ABD will be considered for criteria above]
  • Excellent oral and verbal communication skills.
  • Representation skills include hand drawing and computer-based methods with the ability to integrate these skills into coursework and research as required.
  • Demonstrate potential to develop an individual area of expertise for research/creative activities.
  • Work with Departmental faculty to foster collaboration in teaching and research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Studio teaching experience in an accredited Landscape Architecture degree program.
  • Ability to teach Landscape Architecture seminars based on candidate’s expertise, such as digital technology, construction detailing, landscape performance, planting design, least impact development, professional practice, and history/theory.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, processes, and practices of design thinking and professional practice in landscape architecture.
  • Record of individual research and publications and creative accomplishments.
