Music Theory and Technology Lecturer
University of Dayton

The Department of Music at the University of Dayton seeks a creative and innovative teacher/scholar in the fields of Music Theory and Music Technology. The successful candidate will teach courses in music theory and music technology, and will contribute to ongoing revisions of our music theory curriculum, which serves music majors (in Performance, Education, Music Therapy, Composition, Jazz Studies, and Music Studies) as well as non-majors. We particularly seek candidates who have experience integrating material from outside the Western classical tradition in music theory courses. We welcome candidates who are qualified to teach in a secondary area. This is a non-tenure-track appointment, but is expected to be a long-term position.

The University's Department of Music serves approximately 65 undergraduate music majors and an increasing number of students majoring in other disciplines. Program offerings include Bachelor of Music degrees in Composition, Music Education, Performance, and Music Therapy (currently the largest enrollment), and a Bachelor of Arts Degree with concentrations in Music Studies, Jazz Studies, and Ethnomusicology. Music and Music Technology minors are offered, as well as a master's degree program for music educators.


  • Teach undergraduate courses in music theory and music technology

  • Teach courses in other areas of expertise

  • Department service: Participate in Music Theory faculty team meetings, department faculty meetings, student advising and mentoring, and other department service, including student recruitment.

Job Requirements


  • Master's degree in music theory, composition, or closely related field

  • Three years experience in teaching music theory as instructor of record at the undergraduate level

  • Ability to teach in one or more areas of music technology, such as digital recording, computer music, film and video game scoring, or multimedia

  • Articulated commitment to diversifying the music theory curriculum

  • Excellent written communication skills


  • Doctoral degree in music theory or closely related field

  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience in theory and/or composition, including methods inside and outside the Western classical tradition (e.g., jazz, popular music, or non-Western musics).

  • Demonstrated success in teaching one or more related areas (i.e. jazz theory/composition, popular music, recording techniques, global music theory, music cognition, improvisation, acoustics, studio music instruction, etc.)

  • Demonstrated success in teaching music technology

  • Demonstrated success using technology and innovative pedagogies in theory curricula

  • Experience working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds

  • Willingness to engage with Catholic and Marianist educational values

  • Demonstrated successful experience working as a team member toward shared goals in and beyond the department

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
