The Department of Social Work in the College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont (UVM) seeks applicants for two full-time, nine-month, tenure-track positions who wish to join a socially progressive department and vibrant intellectual community with a distinct social work orientation. Our unique academic programs emphasize critical social construction, human rights, social justice, and a strengths perspective. Our dynamic faculty value creative scholarship and teaching, collegiality, and a sense of humor. We believe that pursuing human rights and social, economic and environmental justice through transformative change is an important dimension of social work education, practice and scholarship.

The department is moving into its next phase of articulating transformative social work and its significance in light of the dilemmas and inequities facing many people and their communities. We embrace the full diversity of our society in order to realize the promise of an inclusive community that embodies the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We welcome applicants with a particular interest in joining us in this distinct commitment.

Although the specific areas of teaching and research are open, we are particularly interested in candidates who are engaged in research and teaching related to constructionist/transformative social work inquiry or practice in areas that include social welfare policy; substance abuse and addictions; aging; violence in multiple communities; sustainability; and health care. The successful candidates for these positions will be expected to teach MSW foundation and BSW courses in research, theory and knowledge in human behavior and the social environment, generalist practice, or social welfare policy as well as elective courses in an area of interest and specialization.

The University

Established in 1791, the University of Vermont is consistently ranked as one of the top public universities in the United States. Our academic programs combine faculty-student relationships most commonly found in a small liberal arts college with the resources of a major research institution. UVM’s tradition of equity and social justice extends not only to faculty, staff, and students, but also is reflected in a commitment to environmentally sound and sustainable practices.

The College

The Department of Social Work is situated within the College of Education and Social Services. The College’s mission is to educate and prepare outstanding professionals in social work, education, and human services; engage in scholarship of high quality; and provide exemplary professional service to Vermont, the nation, and the world. We do this to contribute to a more humane and just society, free from oppression, that maximizes human potential and the quality of life for all individuals, families and communities.

The Department

The Department of Social Work’s accredited BSW and MSW programs prepare social work professionals for direct practice, policy, and administrative positions in diverse contexts. Our curricula emphasize a critical, reflective orientation and social workers as collaborative agents of change. Our distinctiveness is particularly reflected in our nationally recognized MSW program that features a specialized practice curriculum in social constructionist-informed transformative social work.

The Community

UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shore of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation. It offers many opportunities for collaborative partnerships in community and state-wide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.
