The Department of Social Work in the College of Education and Social Services (CESS) at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair/Director at the rank of full professor or associate professor. We seek applicants who wish to provide collaborative leadership to our socially progressive department and vibrant intellectual community. Our unique programs emphasize critical social construction, human rights, social justice, and a strengths perspective. The College

The Department of Social Work is one of three departments in the College of Education and Social Services. The College’s mission is to educate and prepare outstanding professionals in social work, education, and human services; engage in scholarship of high quality; and provide exemplary professional service to Vermont, the nation, and the world. We do this to contribute to a more humane and just society, free from oppression, that maximizes human potential and the quality of life for all individuals, families and communities.

The Department

The Department of Social Work’s accredited BSW and MSW programs prepare social work professionals for direct practice, policy, and administrative positions in diverse contexts. Our curricula emphasize a critical, reflective orientation and social workers as collaborative agents of change. Our distinctiveness is particularly reflected in our nationally recognized MSW program that features a specialized practice curriculum in social constructionist-informed transformative social work.

The Community

UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shore of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation. It offers accessible opportunities for collaborative partnerships with community and statewide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.

Responsibilities:

The Chair/Director is the administrator responsible for leading, managing, supporting and coordinating the work of the Department. The chairperson works closely with the College’s Dean and leadership team on behalf of the faculty and collaborates closely with the BSW, MSW, and Field Education Coordinators, the department Business Manager, and faculty, students, and alumni. The current faculty consists of tenured associate professors and senior and part-time lecturers, most of whom are covered by the full-time or part-time collective bargaining agreement between the university and United Academics. The chair also works collaboratively with other chairs within CESS. Two tenure-line assistant professors are being recruited simultaneous with this position.

Specific Responsibilities:

The Chair/Director is responsible to the CESS Dean for the effective management and coordination of the work of the department. This includes specific responsibilities defined by university policy, e.g.: making faculty assignments, recommending faculty appointments and reappointments, mentoring and conducting annual performance reviews of faculty, attending to courses of instruction, budget preparation and administration, and assessing effectiveness of departmental instruction and advising. The Chair/Director also is responsible for scholarship and teaching as a member of the social work faculty.

In adherence with CSWE accreditation policies and standards, the Chair/Director, program and field education coordinators and the faculty work collaboratively to design department administrative and leadership processes, develop curriculum and formulate and implement policies that support the education of generalist and transformative practice social workers. The chairperson also represents the department in the larger social work community and its national organizations (CSWE, NASW-VT, and NADD).

Job Requirements

A masterís degree in social work, an earned doctorate in social work or a closely related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants with two or more years post-MSW social work practice experience. One year of relevant administrative/leadership experience such as program coordinator, department chair, director, or dean. Five years of teaching experience in social work or directly related area. A record of scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor (with tenure). Appreciation of a social constructionist or closely related approach to the study and practice of social work, evidenced in publications, teaching, and/or prior administrative experience. Demonstrated commitment to the social work profession and its human rights and social, economic and environmental justice values. Ability to balance excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service with strong collegial, communication, and collaborative leadership skills.
