Job Description

Assistant Professor, African American Studies/African Diasporic Studies
Bryant University

The Department of English and Cultural Studies at Bryant University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the fields of African American Studies or African Diasporic Studies. While we seek candidates with primary expertise in literary studies, we are also interested in a candidate’s ability to teach and write about literature within an interdisciplinary cultural studies framework. This appointment, which begins in August 2018, offers a competitive salary with full benefits.

Our innovative academic programs are attuned to the needs of industry and society. We have 3459 undergraduate students who hail from 36 states and 59 countries. We also have 211 full- and part-time graduate students. Bryant is located in Smithfield, RI, and is 15 northwest of Providence, RI, and one hour south of Boston, MA.

The Assistant Professor in African American Studies or African Diasporic Studies is responsible for teaching three courses per semester (introductory and upper-division literary studies courses), sustaining an active and productive scholarly research agenda, and contributing to departmental growth and development. We seek a candidate who is able to contribute to any of our affiliate programs: Africana/Black Studies, American Studies, Latin American and Latina/o Studies, and Women’s/Gender/Sexuality Studies. The successful candidate should be committed to teaching excellence, and will be expected to develop new courses, mentor students, and participate in service activities that include designing and leading new initiatives.

Job Requirements

Interested candidates must have obtained a PhD by summer 2018 in African American Studies, African Diasporic Studies, American Studies, English, or any related interdisciplinary field.

Successful candidates will have a solid teaching portfolio and evidence of a productive scholarly research agenda.
