Associate Dean for Graduate Student Affairs
The Graduate School is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Associate Dean for Graduate Student Affairs. Reporting directly to the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School, the Associate Dean coordinates and oversees many aspects of the management of Graduate School operations, processes, and activities, with particular emphasis on the welfare and professional development of Penn State's graduate students. As the land-grant University of the Commonwealth, Penn State is composed of the University Park campus and 23 other campuses throughout the state. The Graduate School, established in 1922, is one of the nation's largest graduate schools, with more than 13,500 graduate students enrolled in residence at University Park; Penn State Harrisburg, the Capital College; Penn State Erie, the Behrend College; the Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies; the College of Medicine, as well as at a distance through Penn State's World Campus. Penn State offers over 190 graduate fields of study. The Graduate School is responsible for overseeing the admission, matriculation and graduation of all graduate students across the University, maintains academic standards and adherence to academic and administrative policies; promotes and provides professional development opportunities for graduate students; and promulgates best practices for graduate faculty to augment the efforts of graduate programs and colleges. Primary responsibilities of the position include addressing graduate student concerns and grievances, assessing areas of graduate student need, and advising graduate students, faculty and administrators on a variety of issues, including compliance with Graduate Council policies. The position serves as University-wide Ombudsperson for graduate students, and as the Graduate School representative on Penn State's Behavioral Threat Management Team and on University committees and task forces dealing with graduate student issues, including committees of Graduate Council. The position serves as the Dean's representative to the Graduate School Alumni Society Board of Directors and as the Graduate School liaison to the Graduate and Professional Student Association, and provides administrative oversight of the Graduate School Teaching Certificate and the Graduate Writing Center. The Associate Dean is responsible for Graduate School programming directly related to graduate students, including enrichment and professional development activities such as the New Graduate Student Orientation, Career Exploration Workshop, Grant-Writing Workshops, and the annual Graduate Exhibition. The Associate Dean analyzes and prepares reports on sensitive issues, complex problems and initiatives, including recommendations for action. The position also assists with strategic planning, preparation of written communications and public presentations for the Dean's office, and attends national and regional meetings of the Council of Graduate Schools and the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The Associate Dean regularly collaborates with the offices of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs, Affirmative Action, as well as with the Advisory Committee for Graduate Education (ACGE). Additional duties to be assigned by the Vice Provost and Dean, and may include a wide range of administrative roles and key academic support to advancing the unit's strategic goals for graduate education, as outlined in the Graduate School's Strategic Plan (http://www.gradschool.psu.edu/about-us/stratplanandtfrpts/). The successful candidate should have a commitment to graduate education, diversity and inclusion, and demonstrate excellent judgement, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and leadership ability. The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of national and global issues and trends affecting graduate education, particularly with respect to preparing graduate students for 21st century careers, graduate student-centered wellness and safety issues, and graduate student behavioral expectations and professionalism. The successful candidate should have a record of accomplishment that includes evidence of leading complex projects and initiatives; building consensus among diverse constituencies; promoting high standards of academic excellence, ethics and integrity; and have the ability to work effectively and promote collaboration in a multi-campus, highly interdisciplinary environment. Graduate program leadership experience, and a background in conflict resolution are highly desirable. Qualified candidates must hold a doctorate, with a background in counseling preferred.
